Kwin 3 Posted January 19, 2024 Posted January 19, 2024 I was wondering if it's possible to force Emby to transcode HDR content to certain devices. When i'm watching via Emby Theater on Windows 10, connected to a SDR-TV (LG 2013), Emby is direct streaming HEVC HDR10 content to that client, even though the display doesn't support HDR. Obviously this results in the image being way to dark because there's no transcoding (and therefore no tone-mapping) applied. Is there a way to force transcode on certain devices IF the source material is in HDR10 format? I can force transcode if I lower the bitrate far enough, but that really hurts the quality of the stream. It would be great if you could set/overule transcode rules per player and/or device untill Emby correctly detects the lack of a HDR device. 1
visproduction 315 Posted January 20, 2024 Posted January 20, 2024 Kwin, I wonder if encoding from HRD10 and other HDR codecs to a SDR playback actually looks OK? I think that blu-ray media just has a second non HDR version to play because converting creates terrible results. Some people find the results acceptable. I have not seen anything that works for proper color balance. There are some template filter settings with different software that sort of work, but are not really acceptable. I think putting up a different library entirely for HDR playback is a better choice. Users can choose if their TV and connection can handle HDR and use the HDR library or just do to the standard color library. If you do that, then add an HDR logo banner on top of each poster for the media, so it's easy to see which is which in searches that show both media.
Luke 42081 Posted January 20, 2024 Posted January 20, 2024 Hi, currently we don't always force transcoding for this, but this is something that we need to look at adding. Thanks.
