Double Natted and trying to figure out my options

Hey All,

I can't see my emby server outside my network and I am def double-natted. My Internal outgoing IP on my router doesn't match the public IP shown in "what's my IP"

In the past I had to pay an upcharge for my provider to give me my own public IP address, which I didn't mind doing, it was like $10 more a month

I am double natted with my current provider, but I noticed on my bill I am also paying for "bridge mode" on a second line as an add-on.

I have a netgear nighthawk router plugged into my fiber modem, is there something I can do on my end and make it work? I don't know how bridge mode works.

Figure I would ask here to get a better understanding, I'm going to call my provider and see what my options are if there isn't anything I can do with what I have

Thanks again for the input

Sharing the provider name might help in case someone in the forums is familiar with their services. Figure out what your ISP means by "bridge mode".

If you have a fiber gateway with integrated ONT then configuration often enables the mode you need to get the public WAN address on your router. Make and model would be helpful.

If you have a separate ONT then with some providers it can be as simple as plugging the router WAN port to the ONT jack. But if they have network authentication then you're stuck with their gateway.

And last but not least - IPv6 if offered is the best long term solution.

It's empower internet, I think it's a local outfit, maybe spans a state or two

Router is a Nighthawk RAX35

I'm going to get with empower and find out what I have actually

Thanks again for the help!

First ask them if they use cgNAT; if yes, then ask them if you can get a fixed address (usually for $$).

Fiber gateway make and model?

I'll look it up when I get home, I forgot what model it was

I did call empower, they can sell me a static IP....but he changed me over to a "legacy bridge" whatever that means at no additional costs. I'm going to check everything when I get home later.

Cool. Let us know how it goes. One thing to check with them is that they might bridge to a specific LAN port on the modem/gateway.

Did you try and forward the ports on your provider device? (In addition to your Router)

I have the double nat thing figured out, the provider fixed that.

Now I have to figure out how to get emby connect to work, it's running in a docker on unraid and when I sign in remotely it's able to see the server, but when you click on it it says server unavailable right now.

I have upnp enabled on both the router and emby...but it's not port forwarding automatically. I tried to manually forward the ports, no luck

Weird thing, I have plex running in a docker too and as soon as the provider fixed what they did, plex connected remotely like a champ, no issues, even the upnp worked and picked up the plex ports......but I hate plex lol

I'm at a loss right now, I feel like I checked everything, read the tutorials but I know I am missing something here

They did, I had to move the cable one port over for it to work again

Make sure all of the info on the Emby dashboard and Network settings is correct for local (LAN) and public (WAN) entries.

Don't rely on upnp. It's better to disable that on both Emby and your router and manually forward the ports you need.

I'm at a loss I know my settings are correct.

  • My external router IP matches the "what's my IP scan" No double Nat. (Again plex works now)
  • Docker image is set as host to port 8096 . So in my emby configuration dashboard my local LAN address is the "same as my server:8096"
  • My remote access IP is what is shown in "whats my IP" :8096
  • I disabled upnp in emby and my router
  • I manually set up a port forward  to my server address with 8096, TCP connection (port is open)

Tried emby connect at work, it sees the server, and shows both the local and public IP with :8096 ...but when you try to acces it, it says we are unable to connect to the selected server right now, please ensure it is running and try again.

In theory, this "should" be working. Unless I am missing a step on Unraid and there is a firewall setting I am unaware of.

Can you get to it directly via browser?

Just checked it, I can get to it from a browser offsite with no issues...signed right in

Did you open the ports on your provider device as well. I had this issue as well' with or without the double nat i would still try.

I'm not sure how to even get into it, I think I have to call them on something like that

You are able to connect remotely so the network setup and access are fine now. The current problem seems specific to Emby Connect but I don't use that feature. I do believe that you have to use the same protocol as your server: https if you have that enabled and http if you don't. Some browsers might automatically try to upgrade the connection for security but that won't work if your server is http.
