Lost Admin Menu choices & now Emby won't play media on any device

Hi All,

After a recent shutdown and restart of Emby, I've found I can scan my old "pre-restart" media library list but couldn't see any updates.

When logging into the admin management page I found I no longer have any admin options and have also found that when trying to access any media on any device (Nvidia Shield, Phone Android App, Windows Chrome Browser) all I get is the spinning wheel showing its loading but when looking at what I can in the admin page it appears to be playing the file.

Any ideas how to fix/troubleshoot this as it was working perfectly well prior to the shutdown and restart.

Current Windows Emby Server version is 4.7.14.0 and it appears as part of the shutdown/restart it has updated plugin OMDB to 1.0.21.

Regards

Austie

Are you maybe low on HDD space? Is your transcode-temp folder maybe getting full or has an excessive number of files within?

Posted (edited)

@GrimReaperNope not low on anything have a 4tb SSD with only Windows, emby & norton for protection installed taking up less than 500gb and 16gb of ram (yes old 4th gen i5 will be moved to either a newer NUC or QNAP NAS box native in the next 3-6 months after last migration failed due to API error for collections)

Has worked perfectly until this recent shutdown/restart

The losing the admin aspect is weird as after 2 hours it came back so gathered these logs for reference but even checking to play a file still didn't work & scanning files has completed without updated or/new files also for reference.

normally its like 5 seconds then play if that again been flawless for about 1-2 years prior

It's like it doesn't see the NAS boxes anymore for some reason

You have a lot of errors in your logs

2023-12-20 19:05:04.487 Info LibraryMonitor: Skipping realtime monitor for \\TS-431KX\Movies\N-Z because the path is currently not available
2023-12-20 19:05:06.043 Error MediaSourceManager: Error getting media sources

Can you connect to the NAS and play a video directly of that.

Did you just prior to this install windows updates ?

This Weeks windows updates introduced some network issues, but I have only heard about that being with wifi.

Can you try clearing browsing data and seeing if that helps?

Posted

@LukeI've cleared the browsing data and that still hasn't changed the menu as after another restart of the system the admin options have gone again.

Weird part of all this @jaycedkI can access all the shares on the NAS from the PC without any issue, just seems for some reason Emby can't access the shares and nothing has changed from a permissions point of view.

We're looking at two different things here. First is the issue of why you've lost admin access.

Second is why the server can't access these folders:

System.IO.IOException: System.IO.IOException: Element not found. : '\\TS-431KX\music\A-M\Hatebreed\1997 - Satisfaction Is the Death of Desire'

This part is for you to figure out as I can't answer that for you. I would make sure the path exists, is reachable, and can be accessed by copy pasting that location into the windows explorer address bar. If windows explorer can't reach it, then neither will Emby.

@LukeI suspect I have found the networking issue out and am working to resolve it as we speak as the Qnap is denying the account all of a sudden from accessing the device.

The concerning part is the disappearing admin options as that's never happened before.

The server won't let you remove admin status for every single user, although the upcoming 4.8 server release is better about this than 4.7. But chances are you have another user on the server with admin rights and you can use them to restore admin access to the one that lost it.

If you're not sure about this, try using the forgot password process in the web app and leave the username blank when you do this. This will reset the password for every single user on your server, and it will list out all the users for you, and hopefully in that list you'll remember who the other admin is. Then you can login as them and fix everything up.

As I understood this:

Admin access is not lost but temporary delayed, indicating that something is likely interferring with the process.

Can be that norton for protection is blocking it.

For starters, I'd look into disabling Norton Real-Tine scanner or completely uninstall suite in order to eliminate it from the equation.

OK yea I missed that part, sorry. Then you probably don't need to reset any passwords. It could just be a client-side error in the web app where it's not loading those menu options. I saw this once on the beta channel and hammered it out a bit more so that it shouldn't happen in the upcoming 4.8 release.

I might just wait for the 4.8 release and see if it occurs then, thanks guys
