STRM files when played show no subtitles....but they are there

This is a new problem.  I have been creating STRM files lately so 1 copy of a movie shows in multiple libraries for ease of finding them.  Now up until a day or so ago once I played the STRM file emby recognized all the audio and subtitle streams in my MKVs and then there was no way to tell you were playing a STRM file.  Now I only get audio options, no subtitle options even though all movies have at least on sub.  I thought it was because the subs were external SRT because most of the STRM files I have been creating lately point to Blu-Ray or DVD rips where I mux the SRT sub into the MKV with the re-encoded audio to make them portable.  I went ahead and put the sub I am having trouble with into the MKV and still no go.

But this worked fin last week.  I don't think there is any log that I can attach for this issue so advise if I'm wrong.

Any ideas?  Very frustrating.

Hi there, how are your files named and organized?

There is nothing wrong with the way my files are named or organized, the same way they have been since I started using emby.  One folder has an MKV named:

The Death of the Incredible Hulk (1990) DVD.mkv

and a STRM file pointing to it, it has internal SRT subs and they show up from the STRM location and play fine.  In another folder I have an MKV named:

Christmas With the Kranks (2004) STARZ.mkv

Christmas With the Kranks (2004) STARZ.eng.srt

The subs are both external and internal and from the STRM location the movie itself shows up, and the audio options show up but the subtitles are absent.  There is no way this could be a a naming issue anyway as then the STRM file wouldn't paly anything.  Considering the subs are internal and the movie plays that is definitely not a naming issue.

Any suggestions?  This just stared,  last week I added the first movie I listed and it's fine yet those I have added in the last few days do not show the subs, internal or external.

OK to my knowledge I don't believe this has ever been supported. You can have an external subtitle next to the strm, and that covers the most common use case, which is strm pointing to a video url (not file).

Why do you need strm pointing to local files anyway?

It is supported because it works perfectly fine.  I found the info on the emby website....and I have multiple movies working this way perfectly fine .  It is only the last few I have added that don't show the subs.

Because emby doesn't give me the option to keep movies that are either part of a TV series or spin offs in the TV shows so people know they exist...if they didn't already.  I don't want to put them in specials if they don't belong there, albeit sometimes they do, it's why I asked for a way to keep movies in the TV show section with proper art and all.  Currently I have those movies in specials under TV shows and then use a STRM file in my movies location so the movie shows up with the proper art etc. if just perusing movies but it is also available under TV shows where it belongs...sans proper artwork etc.  Only option considering emby does not allow for this naturally.

For normal libraries, yes, but I don't think this has ever worked for strm. When we probe the url inside the strm for media info, we're not checking if it's a file and then looking at the directory contents and things of that nature. We never have.

Don't ask me, the first ones I did worked perfectly fine and had subs in the MKV file.  I just dropped the sub file next to the STRM in the other library and now the subs work.  Not a big deal I just don't understand why it works with some and not with others.

Look at your own documentation on the website Luke, that is where I learned how to use STRM files.  It specifically says you can point it at a file.

You can, however it's never been true that with strm you get the exact same experience and every single feature as a regular library. We can update the doc to make that more clear.

Better yet, update emby to make it work properly. 😉🤣

This really needs to work properly because there are times that things belong in multiple libraries and it is silly to need to have multiple copies of video files on the hard drive.  TV movies belong in Movies and in TV shows is just one example.  Plus right now with the Holidays I have a library for Holiday Movies & Specials and many of these movies sit in normal libraries all the time but for ease of finding them I have this library up right now and it is the home for certain content that doesn't belong anywhere else and I will simply turn it off after the New Year until next Holiday season.

There are tons of classic movies that are not actually "Christmas" movies per se but at this time of year I want people to find them in the Holiday library in case they want to have a look.  Sorry, genre is not a good way to find things in emby.

I know it's not the solution you're looking for but, why not use MKVtoolnix to embed the subtitles in the MKV file ?

Will take you 5 minutes and will solve your issue.

Just as an idea :)

If you read more carefully they are 😉.  They still don't play on some of my STRM files, but some do....hence my frustration.  Ever since I have revisited my DVD and Blu-Ray collection I have started embedding all the subs into the MKV to make them portable if need be because it's easy to do so since I rip the Master Audio file and use AAC to create a stereo and 640kb/s Surround audio file to put back into the MKV then deleting the MA track.

Dropping the appropriate sub into the folder named the same as the STRM file solves the problem so it's no big deal but I just don't know why some work and some don't.

Hello, I recently started using .strm, if mkv, m2ts, mp4 files can be played, then when adding Vod (m3u8) I cannot get emby to play through exo or external players.
