subtitles won't show unless start playing with them on with MP4s

I have an MP4 that I created using Handbrake from a TS file Emby recorded.  There is one subtitle track.

If subtitles are off when I start playing the video, they won't display when I toggle them on.

If subtitles are on when I start playing the video, they display, and I can toggle off/on and it works properly.

Testing on the 4.8 beta channel they're showing up for me, so I think that's a good sign for the next release.
