Yes, but by now, Kodi is Not really usable. I would need to do a lot of work to get it like I want it to be.

At the Moment it is eben worse than the original emby Apps.

This is a big issue with emby at all. The Windows app is great but Android is a deal breaker.

In what way is Kodi not usable? All videos run smoothly in the native mode of the add-on. The Android app could certainly be adapted accordingly, but I see a lack of interest from the Emby team itself.

Well, Kodi itself is usable off course. But not wothout a well configurated ui. And this is my problem at the moment. The update killed embuary skin.

Well, I am sure, emby team would be able to make a good Android (TV) app. But, unfortunately they don't want to.

I would suggest making a post in the appropriate forum for issues with either the emby for ATV or standard emby for Android app.

I use both on my shield, Chromecast, and onn 4k pro and they are rock solid and work great.

Than compare it with Kodi or the Windows emby app...

I've never used the Windows emby app, as I don't have a Windows machine connected to my TVs, so I can't compare.

I've used Kodi since it was XBMC on my modded OG xbox, and I've noticed zero additional issues since switching to the emby android app full time about 2 months ago. YMMV I guess though.

That's why I use Maven's Kodi version (Nexus). There is no direct automatic update for the whole build. This is only possible via sideload. So I have sole control over what gets updated and what doesn't.

I now always set up Kodi on the PC, and then just copy the "addons" and "userdata" directories over to my shield (previously deleted those directories there), where Kodi only has the basic settings. Then check the file paths again, update the library via the Emby addon, which speeds up the whole process immensely. Especially since I have three shields in my household.

But you could test it on a normal Windows computer.

If you play a UHD movie with HD sound, the Android app pukes and you no longer have smooth playback. And if you have a movie like "Gemini Man" with a frame rate of 59.94, bit rate 88 MB/s, and a soundtrack with TrueHD Atmos with a bit rate of over 4000 kb/s, the Android app can no longer cope. Kodi also reaches its limits, but you can still watch it without any playback problems.

If you only play HD formats up to 1080p, the Android app is sufficient. If you have a server with thick hardware that also eats up a lot of power, you could of course also be happy with the Android app. But I personally have other things to finance apart from the hardware. Essential things like food, drink, clothes, car and so on.

I have a 77" OLED TV in my living room with Atmos speakers set to up. I watch mainly 4k / uhd Blu-ray rips with HD audio using the android app on my shield with no more issues than I did with Kodi (which is too say very few issues). My emby server is running a 4th Gen Intel i7 with 24 gigs of ram, so hardly a powerhouse, which is why I direct play everything.

Again, I guess YMMV though ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The "old" Intel still has more power than a NAS. After all, it has eight threads. And even if it's just the 4770, it has 3.9 GHz per core. You also have 8 MB of cache. But it is a corresponding power guzzler.

My NAS has a Celeron with two cores at 2.9 GHz each with 4 MB cache. Needs significantly less power. But never reaches the power of your i7.

Difference between the Emby app and Kodi: the server provides the video, even if it does not transcode. Kodi, however, can access the video file directly. In Plex, for example, you can also access the file directly. Emby has deactivated this function. You can only do this with an external player. And the shield would have to be rooted for this.

So you can believe me, even if your server is old hardware - it's still in a completely different league in terms of power.

Not true if you speaking of the Emby-Kodi's plugins.

Not if you are talking about the Emby-Kodi plugins.

I am talking about the Emby Android app.

It's still possible under Kodi, where it works perfectly - that's why it drives me up the wall when people try to tell me that my hardware is too weak.

Im use to the old skin that blends in nicely with kodi but this is a refreshing change.

So installed Linux Mint with the new kodi omega and its running insanely well.
I would like to now theres a "The Movie db" showing upcoming movies and trending movies.

is it possible to somehow show the same when u select the Tv shows?
so when u open tv shows it can show at the bottom upcoming tv shows or trending tv shows?

and another thing on 4k the menus and the font is very small is there a way to maybe just make them a tad bigger without loosing the 4k capabilities?

AndroidTV and Android apps work perfectly well with 4k, thd etc at 100mbit/sec remuxes.  If you are having issues then its a combo of your setup.

I do agree that emby has made a poor strategic decision on disabling smb on the android app for real direct play (same as kodi/plex).   I use an older version of android that still supports smb for this reason, but i know http streaming works just fine as well.

Quite my words - even Plex supports it. May I ask which version this is and where I can download it? Does it support DTS-HD HighResolution?

The current app detects the android version and then presents the real direct play option, which then works the same as the windows or linux direct play option.  On android you need to map the smb drive(s) and use unc on the media optional file path.

Re dts-hd hra .. yes, last time i looked hra worked ok but i believe thefe is still an issue with 96k sampling.

I meant this version. What version number is it, and where can I download it? How do I prevent it from being updated?

Its the previous shield experience  android version 8.2.3   just google it and you'll find it + instructions.  But it involves rooting the shield to go back.. so not an ideal situation.

I wish emby would just allow the user to make a choice on the current android version but they didn't want to label their app as needing file level access / permissions .. 🤔

They should have allowed the option and when selexted, provided instructions on how to give access.

I see. At first I thought you meant an old Android app from Emby, and not the operating system of the Shield itself.

I've already thought about whether I should reset it. And at the moment I see no reason to stick with this system. Apps like Disney+ don't have a good picture. My Sony TV does that much better. At the moment it only runs Kodi/Emby and nothing else.

I am using mostly shield experience 8.2.3 as it is most stable. The best tutorial i have found is this one. https://florisse.nl/shield/
Some have said the files are hard to find but i have them still including drivers.

Yes - I also followed the instructions. It worked perfectly.

But I still can't get Directplay to work - only http instead of file. Network paths are stored in the libraries, and the server is also entered as storage in the shield. Have I overlooked something somewhere?
