spent too much time trying to get screen captures to work with QuickTime.

This is a file that was transcoded converted with Emby from vp9/webm to hevc/mkv.

I don't know what exactly this screen is telling me, in terms of why it is transcoding.

@Luke I have been watching the Activity streams the last few days pretty heavily and I can see that you have a whole lot going on. The fact that this is transcoding hevc to avc isn't the end of the world for me personally (and not my highest priority issue) so I'm just leaving the note that I don't see any particular justification for the format transcoding other than container incompatibility. Sorry for hijacking the post and diverting from the original topic.

Hi, it is converting to a compatible container. Did you specifically configure the app to use the native player? Try setting that back to auto and it should be able to direct play.

Yeah I think I figured out that, separate from converting the container format, it is converting HEVC to AVC because Apple TV does not support HEVC over HLS (for some reason); only fMP4. I find this to be an acceptable compromise because, because, as we've discussed in this thread, MPV has demonstrable audio sync issues on Apple TV, seemingly regardless of who implements the library, and as a result, we are pushed to use only the native player.

I mean, ideally, Emby would support fMP4 output so that Apple TV could natively handle decoding HEVC. However, this is not nearly as high a priority in my opinion as solving the issues with Apple TV Emby app seemingly abandoning media playback while Emby server fails over from an attempt at direct play to transcoding.

I've written more about what I've discovered here, but perhaps I need to collect all of this information into a new post.
