ototos 0 Posted November 19, 2023 Posted November 19, 2023 Hi everyone. In a few days I should renew a renowned opponent of Emby, but I would like to switch to your service. Are there any promotions for Black Friday? Thank you  @ebr

I remember when I asked this question 3 years ago to the week, IIRC I think any answer I got was ambiguous at best.....but I checked on Black Friday and Viola!!! I'm not sure how I should evaluate my purchase.....but emby has taken over my life so I guess I got a good deal on an addiction which led me to spend way more money on this stuff than I ever would have with WMC.

FatherSaint 25 Posted November 24, 2023 Posted November 24, 2023 I just signed up and purchased for $99.00. To be honest, I haven't even downloaded or tested Emby yet, but P (for which I also have a lifetime license) has forgotten its roots and is pushing streaming and other spy on your friends watching choices nonsense. I'm running JF side-by-side with P, but just can't get used to the way JF does things. I hope that Emby works out and becomes my sole solution, but even if not, I'm happy to support the alternatives. 1

It's admittedly little things with JF. I plan on trying to run Emby side-by-side with P and JF for a better testing, so I'm currently doing a full backup of my server before I install Emby and give that a go. I have the Emby app now on my Roku 4 Ultra devices, which I have on each of our two TVs. Off the top of my head, In P: - Episodes are immediately marked as watched without having to get out of the show and back in for it to update - I appreciate the Home screen with content being currently watched and newly added content below that. It doesn't need any help to do that and is a "clean" and simple display of everything. - I like the posters and "larger" layout when I'm actually in the movie, but for browsing, I prefer a more condensed appearance I'm not against change, but I do want things to work the way that *I* want them to work. I'm willing to be flexible, but I'm hoping that Emby is closer to P than it is to JF... time will tell.
GrimReaper 4739 Posted November 24, 2023 Posted November 24, 2023 Fair enough. Hope you'll find Emby worth sticking with. Cheers

If for example you install Emby and then Jellyfin, Jellyfin will trash the Emby install because there are still artefacts of Emby within the Jellyfin code base. Registry keys for example.

Thanks... yes, I found out yesterday. In my case, I already had Jellyfin installed and then did a new installation of Emby. After that, using the Jellyfin shortcut actually launched Emby. I removed BOTH, restarted and installed only Emby. Now, Emby seems to be having trouble scanning TV Shows - it did ok with Movies. I have a lot of shows, so maybe it's just slow, but it seems to be stuck at 91%. I hope that Emby works out...
ebr 16169 Posted November 25, 2023 Posted November 25, 2023 Hi. It most likely isn't "stuck". Please give it time to finish. Thanks.

It's not stuck, just wait like ebr said. With lots of shows it is going to take a long time because your system has to scan each episode to create thumbnails and depending on your system specs this can take quite some time. Same goes for a large music collection. If you dump a large collection into emby it can take hours to scan everything. But then incremental scans are rather quick.

What threw me off was testing vs full installation. I already had an established version of Jellyfin installed when I then installed Emby. I have found Emby to be the superior option and I did a FULL removal of Jellyfin (and Plex.) In that side-by-side installation with Jellyfin, Emby "found" and set up all my media VERY fast. I realize now that Emby must have used the existing Jellyfin metadata for things to go so quickly. When I installed it again AFTER I had removed Jellyfin, it had to actually find and configure all the media. But, yes, it's working fantastically well. One of the greatest things for me is that Emby handles external .SRT files perfectly, where Plex would all too frequently be slightly out of sync. Another is that Emby is somehow making the videos look much better. The old Rod Serling version of The Twilight Zone is a dramatic example of that; I've seen the episodes before and after Emby and the difference is significant. 1
