Cannot get Emby to connect via WAN

Recommended Posts

Hello!

This problem started today when I set up a new server with a new modem. I've tried to connect via WAN for hours, my modem is portforwarded, and I still cannot get emby to show up unless I am on local network. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated!

Hi there, what exactly happens when you try to connect?

Connection times out. Its an improvement from the disallowal but not by much!

Lots of variables that have been hashed out before:  firewalls, network profile, CGNAT, IP address or domain, how testing, etc. ...

You didn't give hardly any info to work with.

okay. the way to figure that out is to ask not be wildly unhelpful and snarky.

firewall has emby whitelisted, NAT is open, still cant connect.

Time out. Across all devices. Works over LAN but nothing else.

Have you done everything here? --

Note the check at the very end - if you have cgNAT, you may simply not be able to connect.

You have an ISP that will visit for something like this?  Where on earth did you find them?

But seriously, if it's not working, then something is not as the setup wiki article expects, and we can only find this by asking specific questions - all too often a general handwaving type answer obscures some minor (but crucial) misunderstanding.  So...

(1)  You have confirmed that canyouseeme.org finds the same address as Emby shows on the dashboard?

(2)  A tracert shows none of the proscribed addresses beyond the first position?

It might also be helpful to show a screenshot or photo of your port-mapping setup in the router so that we can see if it's what we expect.  It might also be worth ensuring that uPNP is not being activated by the port-mapper plugin, if you have set the port mapping up manually, as they could conflict.

ATT is actually super helpful in person in my area! and yes can you see me and the Local IP match for me. Is there a way to reconfigure the port-mapper? Sorry if I get slow I am in the process of moving and the server is just one of many issues!

The port-mapper in Emby can be turned off in the settings, or the port-mapper plugin uninstalled (I've done that, so I can't check where the switch is! - probably near the bottom of the network settings page).

The port-mapper uses the uPNP protocol.  But this is these days considered a security risk (it can be used by malware to gain external access to your system), and many routers have it disabled by default.  But not all.

I'm not clear, though, whether you have enabled port mapping by Emby or done it yourself in the router menus.

Reconfigure how? You could just  not use it and instead manually configure port forwarding in your router setup.

Ill try that. is it just a setting on the server side? Thanks again!

removing portmapper and port forwarding on my own did absolutely nothing. im going to assume emby simply does not work with my router and try another media platform unfortunately.

This is not a matter of Emby "not working with your router".  There is some setting or configuration which we need to identify as the thing that needs correction.

okay well ive tried disabling firewalls, enabling/disabling passthroughs, changing NAT, portforwarding, removing portmapper, refreshing DNS leases, flushing DNS, and even starting a new server. I cannot think of anything else other than faulty equipment.

Are you sure your ISP allows use of these ports?

How exactly did you configure port forwarding? Can you please show a screenshot?
