wait

i think we talk about 2 different things. the app that works is the regular android one, the other thats broken is for android tv.

or do i missunderstand something

The regular android app fully supports tv devices and has a layout that is made for TV, when used on a TV device.

im really not sure who decodes the stream but i think its the tv (app runs on nvidia shield, bitstreams (i guess) to tv via hdmi 2.1 which then passes it to the avr which does not matter since the shield does not know of its existence ^^)

How is the AVR connected to the TV?

It sounds like you can achieve the same performance from the TV app as the standard one by selecting "Mix down to stereo" in the audio settings in the app.

via toslink but it does not matter. its a 5.1 setup so no need to downmix.

My point is I think that is what is happening in the other app - you just don't realize it.

If you're happy continuing with the standard app then I would just continue to use that. We are working on getting it into the store for TV devices. Thanks.

Ah alright. Yeah I will continue using the "default" app.

@offtopic why does the android TV app exist in the first place?

Because 8 years ago when we first implemented these apps, Android TV was a brand new environment with a completely different development paradigm from the mobile platform.  We are now trying to unify since technology has caught up to where we don't have to have two separate apps.

so youre basically saying that its fine to use the "regular" app for android since its developed for both but the history of android tv forced you to create the second one. and the android-tv app will disappear or become one with the "regular" android app?

if so, then there is no point on using the "emby for android tv" and i (and probably everyone else) could just use the "regular" app with no drawbacks (except, you have to manually update it since its not in the tv-app-store)

right? if so, then i think the topic can be closed since i should not care about the android tv version of emby

Eventually, yes.

Devs are working on getting standard Android app into TV app store as well.

Here's a long topic related (when I looked at the number of pages, can hardly think of more than a few topics ever being longer):
