Daniel1966 6 Posted October 21, 2023 Posted October 21, 2023 I use Folder View and I want my movies to show up in the order they were released....oldest to newest. I understand how to change the sort order, but I cannot find a way to apply it to all folders. Do I really have to go into each folder individually and make the change? I feel like I am missing something. Then there is the issue that when signing out of Emby and back in, it reverts to the default sort order (by filename). I could get past having to manually change the sorting for dozens of folders, but not if it's going to get reverted next time Emby restarts....

On Windows you can view using the web app in a browser, the "Desktop" Theatre app (downloaded from Emby), or the "Store" Theatre app (installed from the Windows app store). Premiere is a server feature, but may affect whether you can use a client - in this case, both the Theatre apps require Premiere on the server to enable them; unlike iOS and Android apps there is no app unlock available for the Windows apps). The web app in a browser can always be used. Paul
Daniel1966 6 Posted October 27, 2023 Author Posted October 27, 2023 I view Emby on my PC and on Roku TV. The only issue I am having is that the Sort By keeps reverting to sorting by Filename. Yesterday I spent a long time setting all the Sort By to Release Date, and today they are all back to Filename. -Daniel

Maybe I am not understanding what you are trying to do here. Isn't there a separate tab at the top for Folder view, and Shows or Movies, depending if you are looking at TV or Movies. I keep my Folder view sorted by release Date and it hasn't reset, not matter how many times I have rebooted Emby or changed any of the other view filters. Whereas the Movies/Shows tab is the default and is usually set to by title. Are you wanting the Folder Tab to be the default tab?
Daniel1966 6 Posted October 27, 2023 Author Posted October 27, 2023 (edited) I do all the setup and configuring on PC. I use Folder View. I go into each folder (because there is no way to set all the folders at once) and set the Sort By to Release Date. The next day, they are all back to being sorted by File Name. I just want the folders sorted by Release date and for it to stick. -Daniel Edited October 27, 2023 by Daniel1966
Daniel1966 6 Posted October 27, 2023 Author Posted October 27, 2023 . Maybe I didn't say it, but this is MOVIES This is not an issue in TV because Tv episodes have Season numbers and episode numbers to keep them in order.
pwhodges 2012 Posted October 27, 2023 Posted October 27, 2023 Are you using folder view to save setting up collections and showing them in movie view? Because collections get displayed in release order automatically, in my experience. Paul
Daniel1966 6 Posted October 27, 2023 Author Posted October 27, 2023 I am not using Collections. This is a purposeful choice. I use Folder View. I like it. It looks and works as expected ... EXCEPT for the sorting. The sorting stays for a bit (a day or two?) and then reverts to the default (by filename). If I could get the sorting fixed, I would be 100% content.
Daniel1966 6 Posted October 27, 2023 Author Posted October 27, 2023 If I have to start from scratch and redo my entire library and set up Collections just to get movies to sort correctly, I guess I will do that, but it seems unbelievable that this can't be fixed. There isn't a configuration file that can be edited or anything similar?

blgentry 51 Posted October 27, 2023 Posted October 27, 2023 Why use folder view? Do you have some sort of higher level construct in your folders like Genres or something? I see this a lot in other media managers where people only use folders and do not use metadata. It always confuses me. Brian.
Daniel1966 6 Posted October 27, 2023 Author Posted October 27, 2023 (edited) I am very grateful for any help, but I truly don't understand what piece of info I haven't provided. I am on a Windows PC. I have the latest version of Emby (4.7.14.0 see attachment). When doing an update check, it says I have the latest version I do not have Emby Premiere. Regarding why I use Folder View: Before I discovered Emby, I already had all of my movies sorted into folders by Genre and Directors and Actors. I had everything just exactly how I wanted it and the amount of work to try to re-create it exactly in Emby with Collections seemed silly when I could just use Folder View. If Folder View is an available View Option, why does their seem to be a bias against using it? It reminds me of the old cartoon (see below). I'm not being rude, just trying to use humor to convey the very real frustration.... Edited October 27, 2023 by Daniel1966

He's said he has not got Premiere, and so he is unable to use either Theatre app (according to the matrix, they don't have an app unlock, only Premiere). In my quick check, folder sort order doesn't even survive closing and reopening the browser window - but it survives a full restart of Theatre. Paul

"FFS"? Really? You must not remember what it's like when you started something new and had no idea how it worked. If answering questions from dumb newbies pisses you off....why do it? Surely there are others who can answer. I have no idea what a Client App is. Sorry. You can roll your eyes and think how dumb I am. I assumed it was what I used to play the media...and I stated that it's Roku TV. Is there a version number that would help?

I feel like I am missing something. Right now the default behavior for folders is that they start in "filename" sort. This isn't unique to the Roku app. The web app behaves this way too. There is no way to change this default at this time. It does not revert. When you change the sort order inside a folder level it will remember it for that level. But the other folder levels can have their own sort orders. The thread above is for the feature request for what you would like. This is how you would get your suggestion into all the apps. You want to "Like" the first post of this thread. I will also do that since I want this too. Edited October 27, 2023 by speechles 1
GrimReaper 4739 Posted October 27, 2023 Posted October 27, 2023 (edited) As I undestood OP, this is not only about default sorting but selected sort not sticking for them. Edited October 27, 2023 by GrimReaper

The selected sort is sticking. But it does not apply to all Folder levels. Each media type has a folder tab. That folder tab is unique and can be sorted unique. All your libraries folder tabs do not inherit the sort when changing a single folder sort. The default first sort of the folder tab is filename. This is why as you move about folder tabs they all need to be set directly with a sort or they will keep the filename sort. Having the folder tab default to something other than filename is what they want. That feature request thread I gave above is asking for the same thing. Edited October 27, 2023 by speechles 1
