I saw some similar topic in the forum already but I didn't get a clear answer from any of the existing posts, so I am just curious about this feature's status - is this feature already implemented? (I tried 4.7.14 release but can't play iso files), or working in progress on implementation (when will it be release?), or does emby team even consider to implement this feature?

Thanks.

Hi, it's always a possibility for future updates, but have you considered converting to mkv using makemkv?

Posted

Yes converting to mkv is a workaround but it makes more complexed user experience to watch iso contents.

The Emby client application also pops up message “play iso file is experimental feature…” (or something similar I can’t remember exactly), so I just wonder whether this feature is already under implementation and what’s the plan?

Thanks.

Currently the only apps that can play iso are the ones that you can setup an external player with and then have the external player handle it.

I see.

Does the "Conversions" feature built in emby server supports converting from bluray iso to mkv? Or I have to use makemkv tool separately?

Thanks.

Use MakeMKV; the convert feature transcodes individual video files.

Right I would use MakeMKV. The conversion feature as well as playback transcoding are mostly the same in Emby Server, therefore if one has a problem with it, so too will the other (usually).

Bluray iso playback was stopped years ago.  As everyone has stated, you need to convert the contents to mkv.

It will still work with apps that can setup external players, such as Emby Theater for Windows. But for support on every device, yes, convert to mkv.

I have a full backup in ISO (over 800 Bluray FHD/UHD/3D, some few anime DVDs).. i moved away from MKV long time ago, back in the time I was convinced that I had to rip everything to MKV ("you won't lose anything", "better experience", blablabla..) so I ripped my collection to MKV (around 400 discs back in that time) .. it was a pain to rip but it was more a pain to use.. MKV cripples a lot of things that for some people are optional but to many other people are *must have*.. you have to get rid of the menus/extras, you have to get rid of seamless branching, you have to get rid of DoVi FEL.. and for what? I understand that some people doesn't deal with ripping.. they just "download" the MKV from somewhere and call-it-a-day.. but for the people the actually wants to backup their collection, they use to like to have the full experience (it's a pain to have to go to the storage, search for the bluray... etc.. whenever we want to play the extras)

So I re-ripped again the 400 BluRays i previously converted to MKV and ripped again everything in good old un-crippled ISO.

I still use Emby as frontend/cataloguer, Emby functionality is very crippled in that sense.. we do not even get information about the audio track / subtitles in the cataloguer.. we are told that this is complicated to implement, but cataloguers in the Dune/Zidoo players support that, or rippers like DVDFab can get *full* information of the ISOs.

Next to the crippled EmBy catalogue functionality, player is also not going to work (even in direct play, I do not care about transcoding) It would be possible to ignore the menus and play the main movie (Zidoo offers that possibility as well) but even that it's not supported by Emby.. the only possibility is using Emby as (crippled) cataloguer and then have a external player (hardware or software, I use a OPPO player for that). Could we have a better experience?  yes... but we need a friendly developer that believes that this is worth it (Kodi in way more advanced in that aspect)

Hi.  Optical formats are just not really used much anymore.  Everything is video files instead now.

What sources do you expect your customers to use to acquire "video files"?

Almost my entire video collection has come from optical discs that were ripped to MKVs.

I am quite sure that's what he was referring to, ripping the disk into separate files.

As for the OP,  you can rip all the extras for the movie.  Then you put the movie in a correctly named folder,  Name all the Extras (making of, etc) into a subfolder called Extras, and when you open the movie file in Emby,  all the extra files show up below the Cast and Crew along with the movie.

It works very well as you can directly access the content rather than navigating through a menu to get to it.

I've been doing this with Emby for a short time now.  I really like being able to have extras with the movie that they came from.

Menus on discs (DVD or BD) are mostly terrible.  They are slow and require you to figure things out for every individual movie.  I mostly don't want to mess with menus at all.  Just play the movie or the extras.

However, I do acknowledge that some menus are a legitimate art form.  There is a lot of creativity and inspiration in some of these menus.  Some have really made me smile and provided their own little form of entertainment.  That said, I'd rather not have them because of the hassles involved.  Thus I rip everything to MKV.

I get where the OP is coming from.

I too spent a lot of time trying to recreate the Game of Thrones menu systems for each season, they had beautiful video backdrops, which I ripped seperately and used (shame many of the emby clients don't allow video backdrops) but it all takes TIME and trying to identify which m2ts is what extra is a special challenge all in it's own right !

Automating this creation is simply not going to happen though, as the 'structure' of the m2ts is not labelled with what they actually are - it's just a 00001.m2ts - you have to play it and then relate it to the ISO menu, rename it etc ... not fun.

Thus I only do it for the really special UHD's.

would love to see Emby play ISO, especially 3D frame packed ISO files.

Guys give it up.  Physical media will no longer exist shortly, and supporting it is far too difficult.  Rip your media and hoard your ISO files. This is NOT going to go the way you like, and we know all you'll do is complain and complain.  The rest of us have moved on.  It is time you do as well.

Hopefully, never. There are plenty of things the Emby plays quite well and it is hideously easy to convert ISO files to a number of them.

Hi,

Even if I understand that this seems "old and dirty"... and then not very sexy feature to implement.. it was a parte of the Emby story.

The capacity of playing ISO (DVD for my side) was one of the feature supported (or at least partially) by Emby that made me choose Emby.

Today the function is functioning far worse that in the past. Ans it is pitiful...

it is also unnecessary as it is tremendously easy to convert ISOs to just about anything that plays fine. I, for one, do not not see any need for Emby to support ISOs.
Also I do not think Emby has ever officially supported ISO playback. Just because something used to work does not mean it was ever supported or that support is even planed.

Ok, I understand. I'll give up.

Hi, there is another user working on a plugin, so keep an eye out for that in case it goes anywhere.
