Bug: Cutting Off Version Text

Recommended Posts

Hi All.

Unless my naming is not perfect, what is causing the dropping of text?  It doesn't happen with other dual resolution entries from what I see in my system.  The braces don't seem to bother Emby in all other cases?  Odd.

File naming:

It ain't quite, multi-versions should start with exact folder name followed by " -" (space-dash-space).

Multi-version movies

Multiple versions of the same content can be stored in a single movie folder.

/Movies
  /300 (2006)
  /300 (2006)/300 (2006) - 1080p.mkv
  /300 (2006)/300 (2006) - 4K.mkv
  /300 (2006)/300 (2006) - 720p.mp4
  /300 (2006)/300 (2006) - extended edition.mp4
  /300 (2006)/300 (2006) - directors cut.mp4
  /300 (2006)/300 (2006) - 3D.hsbs.mp4

Each version must begin with the folder name, followed by " - ".

If using the dash method anything following the dash will be what you see in the Emby client app.

Tbh, I'm surprised that your items even get multi-versioned named like that. Which server version you're on?

That said, there's a long standing bug of cut-off character being the first different character in version names, i.e. in your example everything up to VC1/x265 is the same for both versions, hence gets dropped, so you might adjust your version names accordingly.

Thanks for the quick response.  Server 4.7.14.0...

Folder is "Superman II (1980)", so it at least matches the start of the filename.

I see how the 'bug' here can play.

Perhaps I am on borrowed time with how it is showing up everywhere else - it works with braces but it also sometimes shows without the braces...

And yet this...

All the hyphens everywhere no doubt casing some messes?  It seems to be mostly cosmetic which is not too grevious really.

I'm experimenting nevertheless...

TY!

Remove the " - Richard donner cut " part from your file name and see what happens.

Have those items been merged manually, via Auto-grouping plugin or Emby core?

@kdackiwIt isn't just what is after the hyphen or between brackets that is shown in the drop down. It is at which point the differences begin in filename. At that point after the same information the relevant information is shown. This is what the drop down is composed of.

All your examples show this as the behavior. Your last one with Superman II. All the redundant part of the filename is removed. Only relevant parts kept.

Superman II (1980) [Bluray-1080p is not shown on purpose. The differences are shown. Does that explain what you are seeing better? Did you expect a different behavior?

If it only shows diffs...and this is good to know...then the behavior is fine IMHO.

A small thing - the versions therefore below should not contain the first brace, yet it does.  Differences start right after.  Is there some other mechanism at play here?

It tries to keep the cut-off at words rather than just raw characters. There's always room for improvement.
