few hopefully simple questions from a newbie

Hi All

I'm moving from Plex and trying to understand a few points with Emby and I hope the community can help me to be less confused. :)

1.  Does Emby Connect require the external IP?  I want to use Emby Connect because I have a friends with Emby who will share his server with me.  So I am trying to setup Emby Connect.  I added my local server with my local IP address (192.168...) to Emby Connect, and it immediately opened the server and I was able to use it.  But now when I login to Emby Connect and try to click on the server it says "Connection Failure... We're unable to connect to the selected server right now. Please ensure it is running and try again."   Do I need to use my external IP address of the server?  (If yes, why did the internal IP work when I first added the server?)

2. How can I get a "3D" symbol on the poster for my 3D movies?  I have some 3D movies in the library and I want to see a "3D" mark in the standard poster view of the library.  I set them as 3D in the meta library and I see "3D" indicated below the title when I open the movie poster.  But in the main library view I do not see any "3D" or other marks.  I understood that I need to use the CoverArt 4.0 plugin for that.  I installed it and setup the plug by clicking "default" > "Indicator Overlays" > "3D" and selected "Text 3d".  But somehow my posters are never updated.  I used "Refresh MetaData" with "Refresh existing images" turned on, but there is no result.  What am I missing?

3. Does subtitle searching really require a $60/yr subscription? Searching for and adding subtitles is very important for me and in Plex I could do it in the free version.  When I try to do it in Emby it says I cannot do it without Emby Premiere.  Is this correct and there is no other way to do it?  If so this $60/year cost is a major disadvantage of Emby vs. Plex and I might just go back to Plex or look at Jellyfin.  (Related question:  Will I be able to download subtitles when I watch something on my friend's share, or will I only be able to use the subtitles that he has on his server?  Does it depend on having Emby Premiere?)

4. How do I know if I have a 14-day trial of Emby Premiere?  I somehow thought I get a free 14-day trial of Emby Premiere just by installing it?  I only registered with and installed Emby a few days ago and most software that has a trial for X days will usually automatically give you the full features for those X days.  Do I need to explicitly sign up for the trial somewhere?

Thank you for your advice/help!

Hi, The Emby Connect feature is aware of both, but how exactly did you set that up? Did you actually use Emby Connect, or did you just do a manual server connection?

No, it's only the in-video search that requires Emby Premiere.

Hi, we don't display that symbol out of the box, but the cover art plugin could help with this.

Wow, thank you for replying so fast!

I didnt notice/try the "Edit subtitles" before so now I see that works before watching.  Will that be available for other non-admin users?  (I want my wife/kids to have the ability to pull subtitles when they need them...)

Also note that I edited my initial question but you answered before I saved my edit so I'll ask here again... how will it work with media from my friends share?  Will I be able to download subtitles when I watch something on my friend's share, or will I only be able to use the subtitles that he has on his server?  Does it depend on having Emby Premiere?

I believe I used Emby connect.  In my server setup I added my emby-connect username.  Then in https://app.emby.media/ I added the server (using local IP) and it worked and immediately opened the server and I was able to use it.  But now when I return to "https://app.emby.media/" and click on the server, I get the error I put above.

If you grant them access to downloading subtitles, and if your friend grants you access on his server to do that.

Right, I understood that too, but for some reason it is not working, I'm trying to understand how to fix it...

If you use the https version of the hosted web app, then the browser will only allow connections to other https addresses or localhost. So that's why it's not accepting your remote address. You need to choose between the following:

  • Setup https for your emby server
  • Use the http version at http://app.emby.media - this is getting harder to do now because chrome automatically switches it and then you have to go and manually change it back to http

Using the http version worked, thank you!  tbh this is not so obvious, so you might want to consider adding a note into the error message suggesting the user to check this, or even better add some code that checks if the non https version is up and if so notify the user (or even just redirect them), if this is technically possible.

Hi, yes I've actually been working on this very thing so you should see that error message in the near future.

Hi.  Emby Premiere does not have a trial period.

Thanks, I thought I remember seeing somewhere while testing about the trial, but I could be wrong.

CoverArt is a Premium plugin - you need to have valid Premiere subscription in order to make use of it.

GrimReaper, thank you for offering help.

Is there any free way to get the 3d symbol on poster-art then?  (Do I understand correctly that Plugin - Iconic Image Enhancer can do it?

If that is the only badge you'd be using then IIRC yes, AFAIR Iconic offers single rule badge in unpaid version.

We work very hard on Emby and we thank you for your support.

I appreciate it and perhaps I will move to a premiere license in the future, but I want to use it for some time first to be sure it works as I expect and my family is happy with it.

(I tend to buy only lifetime licenses...)
