So dark in Android phone

This has been an issue for a very long time, but for some reason, anything I watch via my android phone using the app is soooo dark. I've got all the brightness settings at max and it's still very dark. Playing the same video in any other media player on the same phone doesn't have this issue. It's almost unwatchable except for in very dark conditions.

Any pointers to brighten this up?
