I don't understand Multi-Version naming obviously

The catch with separate movies combined with a collection is that continue watching shows every version when you watch any version.

So you're saying that if I watch one of the Harry Potter movies, in my Harry Potter collection, that "continue watching" will show all of them?  That's kind of strange isn't it?

Here is a forum thread discussing this.  It lists all of the DVD formats and does not show any 24 fps support:

Ah, you've opened up the can of worms so I now have to go down the rabbit hole of understanding.  I knew about the pulldown flags but never understood what that meant to encoding.  But now I will go to the forum with the experts I trust and get schooled as they discussed this with me when they taught me how to de-telecine CableTV recorded content.  This could be why the DVD in question reports as 23.976 fps

That is as imaged by MakeMKV.  It shows no combing whatsoever so it is not telecined nor interlaced in any way.  I thus treat it as progressive content and simply encode it without any de-interlacing filters....so basically I am getting the right output regardless as if it is actually 29.97 fps with only pulldown flags it should still come out OK once encoded as both 24 and 30 are divisible into 120 hz.  This is the confusing part.  Because some, if not many DVDs, are actually telecined with the combing for 2 frames then 3 frames without....thus the need for de-telecining.  I will have to look into this further as I want to know for sure and I have people over at the VideoHelp Forum that have taught me what I do know and one mentioned these flags....so I will have him explain it better and how it needs to be handled when encoding.  What ever I find out I will report back here for any who are interested.  I am always looking for ways to improve what I am doing and this info is timely since I just started revisiting my DVD collection.

Far more importantly, what do you think about my suggestion to split your versions and put them into collections instead?  That's the real point of this thread.  :)  This frame rate discussion is just a technical curiosity for me.

Yes, I like that idea but I am not sure how to implement it as I do not want to have to peruse "Collections" to find my movies.  I have collections turned off now because emby made such a mess of this by automatically, and more often than not, incorrectly creating collections out of EVERYTHING.  Now, if there is a way to create a "collection" in my library that looks like a movie when perusing the library but only shows that it's a collection when you click on it then I am ALL EARS because that would be awesome.  But if I have to have a thousand mini collections I have to peruse to find my movies then I am not interested at all as that is tiring and confusing to my users.  If I can find a movie in my "movie" library that then shows a collection when I click on it that is different.  If that is possible please explain.

Thanks

Take a look at my screen shot a few posts above.  It shows several movies and several box sets (collections) all at the "movies" level.  Green Lantern is a collection I created manually.  If you click it, you will see the view in my second screen shot.

Of course to use collections, the collections feature has to be turned on in the client you are using.  It looks like automatic collections is a feature of each Library (on the server).  So inside the movies library there is a "download collections data" switch you can turn on and off.  Based on a quick search, it looks like it's tricky to get rid of that data once you have downloaded it and had it written to your NFO files.

So, in theory you can have collections turned on, but ONLY use your own defined collections.  But I'm not 100% sure how to get there.  The automatic collections have worked really well for me.

Best of luck,

Brian.

@blgentryThanks Brian.  I will definitely look into that.  I have been wanting to turn collections back on because I want to use it on my stable server for my users so they can find movies easier since I understand their viewing habits but have been hesitant because automatic collections made a mess of it.  I will try it when I get a chance and then I will look into your suggestion as it looks promising.  You may get a PM if I need some help. 😉
