Can't update from very old version

Hi team,

I started again my emby server, it was maybe 2 year I didn't started it.
So old that I forget ( or maybe was deleted) my old account here ^^

I have lot of trouble missing picture and so on, and so first my idea is to update to latest version.

Actually i'm on version 3.2.20.0, and when I try to update it immediately say "failed". As I read on previous post here, I try to reboot server, also stop library scanning to be sure taht no other tasks was running. But didn't help...
 

Because it's very old, maybe there is a specific way to update ? I didn't see any tutorial or other.

I would like, and it's very important, to keep all my data in the database, movies I see or not all data already collected and so on.

If I re-install the server after download the install file from here, we are agree that it will delete all my data no ?

Hi team

Just a quick update, I just remember that I changed my password from my server where is stored my movies and so on. So Emby cannot have access to the server anymore.

After do modification, my emby server is running correctly, I see pictures, can read movie and so on. So this point is great

But update are still impossible.

We haven't been testing updates from that far back so there's definitely an element of unknown here. 

You will probably have better luck by installing the versions that came after incrementally. What OS are you on?

I think that Emby no longer supports Widows 7. But I may be misremembering the timeline. If it is still supported then the support will be going away fairly soon.

Emby Server supports running on Windows 7 SP1 and above. I wouldn't recommend it, but it should work.

I would suggest updating to Windows 10 though. It seems like a perfected version of Windows 7 from how I remember it.

Hi Luke,

Could be a solution, emby running on a virtual machine. I can create a new one on Windows 10 and install a fresh version of last emby server.

But here my question :

If emby scan my folder, did it will download again the cover, picture, people picture and so on ? Or it will just keep the old one ( and do the link to the new database or something like that ? ). Because there is a lot of picture I manually update to change it, and I don't want to lost all this work.
Same for people, I do a lot of work to put picture of people which was not uploaded automatically ?

If new emby, means that new user. So I will lost all information about movies/series already seen or not no ?

Or maybe there is some files taht I can export and import again ?

 

Note : On my actual version, when I add new film, the cover is not good, it take a random image instead of the official cover of the movies. This could be due to old version and maybe the script who go donwload cover is not updated to the latest database on internet ?

So, 

I have create a Windows 10 virtual machine with virtual box. Fresh from installation.

After launch emby server, I has a BSOD even in my physical host.

Until I cannot launch anymore the setup, there is an error : Side by Side (I put you the report)
 

I see a answer from you on the forum about how to solve this.... which show that for google chrome, and solution is to re-install google chrome.

Problem is that I have this on the installer of emby...

Do you have an idea ?

Yes it was, a Side by side error, i din'td understand well.

But this night I initialise again my new virtual machaine, at it's news it wasn't a problem.

And this time I can launch setup, without BSOD. So it's installed correctly.
I'm actually copying all metadata folder as backup procedure ask.

I will keep up update if it will work or not due to big difference of version.

Hi !

So some news, I have my new emby server. And backup was done.

Some informations was ok. But lot of files is missing. I try to refresh metadonnee library and so on, reboot, without result.

Strange this, for people.

As you can see, picture is missing there is like a link broken.

When I check to modify picutre, still same :

But if I click on the three little dot, we can see that here the link to pciture is working.

If I go to choose image, there is no image, for sure I can try to upload every one again, but will be a lot of work.
 

On 3.0.2.20 people was in Folder People in metadata, is still the same ?
There is an way to solve this ?

It's only an example, I have a lot of cover missing and so on.
On my old emby all is still good.

Did you run a full scan of all libraries?

we have not been testing upgrading from a version that old so there is a bit of an unknown factor here.

 Coming from a version that old you may want to consider a fresh start, if you’re willing to do that.

Sorry, I was travelling for works.

Yes, I run several full scan of all librairies, do some reboot, and scan again in case of.

The only scan I didn't do it's people scan, before on the version 3.xxx we can run manually a scan of people, but there is not the possibility on the latest version as I see, execpt if I miss something.

 When you clicked the three dot menu, that wasn’t your image. It tries to download a new one on the fly for people if there isn’t one already.

I do the manual restore process as in your procedure.

oh ! nice ! Wasn't aware of this ! But it's strange that he didn't found any image as my people folder is full ! Maybe the name file or something change... I don't know.

Actually I have no time to investigate, and there is too much difference. Maybe I can start with a fresh Emby from 0 and build by my self step by step everything.

But my question is, my metadata of movies is on each movies folder. Can I run simultaneous 2 emby (my old one and the new one) which are connected to the same shared folder ?

Because my old Emby works well, there is just metadata information missing when I add series for example so it's not so bad for the moment. But for the futur it will be good to run on an updated version for sure...

 

Edit : A question out of Emby. I run on a Windows Server 2008R2 server with an old VMware virtualizator. And I cannot do Win 10 virtual machine. So for the moment I use virtual box on my laptop to do a win 10 VM and install the new version of Emby. But I can't run both on my Windows Server 2008R2 host. Do you have any advice/idea of how update my platform ?

Hi @Luke,

I come back about that, I solve many problem on my new emby server.

The only point I didn't fix it's the people picture. I have no more picture. 
There is always the same issue than below, and if I try do delete picture which was not working it didn't delete it. And if I try to donwload a new one, I can find different picture as choose, but download didn't work.

Maybe there is an mistake from my restore. So I try do delete my People folder to start from 0, restart emby, try to scan all library, all metadata people never appear, and I have always the same issue below.

There is a way to force a refresh people than before ? Maybe I have some files to delete somewhere in database to start form 0 ? do you have an idea ?

It's showing a broken image icon, which means it had an image url, but that something happened to it, e.g. it's all of a sudden no longer valid. Or perhaps a failed download. We'd need to see the server log from that time to say for sure what it was.

But one thing I didn't understand, and it maybe my problem. You speak about image URL, this mean an URL to go on line to take a picture, or you mean the local path to find the picture. Because I don't know how it's now, but on version 3.20 I has all people with picture localy in a folder.

Right well, either that image is having a problem or perhaps the server isn't using it and trying to use an image url that it got from a metadata provider. That's why I've been asking for a server log to help get to the bottom of that.
