Make SRT subs default even if PGS or DVDSUB are in MKV?

Stupid question.....I just noticed some of the subs show up on the emby movie info page as "English (SRT)" and some show up as "English (SUBRIP)" when they are the same?  Is that because the first is external and the second is embedded?

Yes.

Never really paid attention to it, but IMHO that should not be the case and external subs should always be preferred, guided by the logic that if one already went through the trouble of obtaining them - they are likely wanting to use them. "Default" has its own subtitle mode and "Always play subs" should be tag-insensitive, at least I see it that way.

GrimReaper is correct, if one puts the effort into creating or finding external subs then logic would dictate it or they are the most important and if there are more than one external they should be ranked based on language preferences chosen in the settings and then embedded subs would become secondary based on same.

I think it would solve a lot of issues if the emby team would just make it work this way.  It sure would be easier....drop in and external sub and never look back.  LOL

For bulk editing of flags and other things in MKV files, just use jmkvpropedit - I use it all the time.

Hi, have your questions been answered?

Yes, but read GrimReaper's posts because he is 100% correct on how things SHOULD work.  I now understand HOW they work but currently that is not logical.   Dropping an external sub into the directory with the media should always make that the default, regardless of the flags inside MKV etc.

@rodainasI really appreciate your help on this....and I'd like to learn more.   Can you tell me how to use mkvpropedit to switch the default sub flag from the first one in the MKV file to the second?  I have a TV series where every file has a vobsub as the first sub and default and the second is a subrip and it would be easiest to use this method to flip the default flag from the vobsub to the subrip.

Thanks

Silly me, all the information I needed was in the commands you posted before, I just switched it to make sub 2 default to on and it worked perfect!!

I use the Java GUI jmkvpropedit for this; subtitle defaults are my most common use for it, in fact.  Just drop the required files onto the first page, and then on the subtitles tab you can easily edit the required fields of the first subs, then click + to do the same for the second (you get a dropdown to change between them).  It doesn't show you the current values, but that's not important, if you know what you need to do.

Thanks Paul, I tried that several times but it didn't change anything in my files.....I am obviously doing something wrong

Well, you have to press the "process files" button at the bottom; you should then see the log scroll past showing all the changes (and skipping files which don't have the number of subs you have set to be changed).

For me it's always just worked, though, so I don't have any other suggestions.

I was pressing the "process files" button but nothing then I did a google search and it seems that you have to either start the program from a non system drive or open as administrator and then it works fine.  Did all my files in seconds.

Thanks Paul

I assume you don't, hence the discussion. Default mode should look at the Default flag, Forced mode should look at the Forced flag, if you go ahead and implement SDH and/or HI flags support those should get their own modes too, as you cannot have single mode to cover all potential flags as their usage often has totally different scope - or make one Flag mode where you can implement whatever flag priority you like and where each user mileage can vary. But current logic is lacking.

Why does picking Forced subtitle instead of Default subtitle (and external, for that matter) makes sense to you? To me it's completely senseless. If I was happy with available embedded Forced sub, I'd never go and waste my time to obtain external sub, which I would definitely want to use in that case.

@GrimReaper

HI, the hearing impaired status for subtitles, both internal and external will be supported in Emby Server 4.8:

Thanks.
