y29shi 8 Posted September 6, 2023 Posted September 6, 2023 I almost always download the matching subtitle files for all my media files. And for example if I have 3 movies with file names A.mkv, B.mp4, C.avi, I would have A.chs&eng.ass (if it's bilingual containing Chinese and English), B.chs.ass (if it's only Chinese) and C.eng.ass (if it's only English). And I almost always make some minor adjustments to those subtitle files (mainly about font and styles, if I see some obvious translation errors I would fix them as well) so I feel my subtitle files are better than the ones packed in the media files. But in the subtitle setting, there's only one option related to the default subtitle and it's only about language. Can I set it so that it always looks for subtitle files outside the media file but within the same folder, then it doesn't find such file, then choose one from the packed subtitle? Thanks!

Emby will prioritize external subs, if available, based on your language preferences, Subtitle mode set and subtitle flags, but named properly - "chs" is not proper convention for Chinese, you need to use ISO-639 codes. Also, AFAIK there's no convention for multiple languages within same file.

Oh I see... most chinese subtitle makers use this convention (chs for Chinese Simplified, cht for Chinese Traditional, eng for English, and lan1&lan2 means bilingual with language 1 and 2). I'll try using ISO-639 codes then, thanks! Edited September 6, 2023 by y29shi
