Emby all on XboxOne - srt subtitles - transcoding

Is this client app supposed to transcode when using srt sub titles ?

Sounds like you disabled on the fly extraction in server transcoding settings.

Thanks for that - I have never enabled that - The description states this :

Embedded subtitles can be extracted from videos and delivered to Emby apps in plain text in order to help prevent video transcoding. On some systems, this can take a long time and cause video playback to stall during the extraction process. Disable this to have embedded subtitles burned in with video transcoding when they are not natively supported by the client device.

As these I am referring to are srt files and not embedded subtitles in the actual video, maybe I am confused ?

Should this be enabled by default ?  i will enable it now if you think it will help but the descrition is pretty vage relating to my issue.

It is enabled by default. The only way it gets disabled is by unchecking it. Why do you think it's vague? It specifically says Embedded subtitles.

So yes, check the box, and it won't try to turn them in with transcoding anymore.

Cheers - its on now.

 guess I dont know much about sub titles - I never use them, others torun them on - I guess I was confused with the files that are srt and separate, not 'embedded' as such - which I took as meaning in the media file itself.

That's what it means, embedded into the video file.

Its just terminology I guess for someone that does not understand the subs.

Message says this for example - 'Embedded subtitles can be extracted from videos'

But to me, embedded sounds like it is inside the video itself, not a standalone srt file.

Just as video and audio are separate streams in a media file, so subs can be contained in a third stream.  The term "embedded" for this case is perhaps somewhat ambiguous - but when subs are part of the video itself, they are more commonly unambiguously described as "burnt-in".

Embedded is in the video itself and is not a standalone srt.

OK - think I got it now - so....the tick box is nothing to do with the srt files that I download separately.  This particular media file was trancoding then not because of the srt (which I assumed) but because it had an embedded subtitle file and I did not have that ticked.......  I wonder how many of my media files have these embeded subtitles ?

Probably something to look into.
