vishhvaan 0 Posted August 16, 2023 Posted August 16, 2023 Emby tries to delete the "poster.jpg" file on the filesystem even though the option of "Save artwork into media folders" is unchecked in the library setting. I have made the filesystem read-only when I mount in Docker to prevent accidental data loss. Instead of replacing the "poster.jpg" in the location of the movie, I would like Emby to save posters/art into the config folder along with thumbnails. Is there a way to do this? Thanks
pünktchen 1409 Posted August 16, 2023 Posted August 16, 2023 When you disable saving of artwork into your media folders and download some images from an online provider inside Emby, then the new image will be stored inside metadata\library. But after a library scan you will see your old image again because your local media files have always precedence. That's why Emby wants to delete your local image in the first place. 1
vishhvaan 0 Posted August 18, 2023 Author Posted August 18, 2023 Is it possible for Emby to keep track of the fact that the user downloaded a poster and instead use the downloaded one instead of the local image?

Ideally, yes, but until such time, the best thing to do is delete the existing image.
ulrick65 30 Posted October 11, 2024 Posted October 11, 2024 Sorry to resurrect this old thread, but it is relevant to something I just noticed and I want to verify how it works. If I have "Save artwork into media folders" unchecked, and I do a full metadata scan with replace images I noticed in the log that Emby is trying to delete my local artwork and replace it. I have the library folders read only, so it can't do it. This seems counter to what the option "Save artwork into media folders" means. I always thought it meant "don't mess with the artwork in my media folder" but I see now that is not the case. If I have that option unchecked, why does it try to delete it on a refresh? What I would think would happens is that Emby would "refresh" the metadata from the locations I told it to in the first place...which is all the artwork from the media folder and then refresh the people images and .nfo to the metadata folder/people which would basically "reset" any changes made in the Emby GUI and stored in the library, cache, etc. back to what is in the media folder (since I told it "don't mess with the media folder"). I am sure from the post above (and my test results) that it deletes and replaces regardless of the "Save artwork into media folders" setting...but I am wondering why? Thanks.

Hi, it’s because artwork in your media folders will always take priority, so in order to get new images those files will need to be deleted.

I get the need to do that...but I also see a big risk here and I bet that many people have been burned by this and likely never even knew it. I am lucky, I am on Linux and the folder is not accessible to Emby. I think it would be a good upgrade/compromise that when someone clicks "Replace Images", Emby looks at the option set in the Library, and if it says "don't put Artwork in media folders"...then give them an additional crystal clear warning that they are about to delete files that Emby never created. Thanks.
