Nisten 15 Posted August 15, 2023 Posted August 15, 2023 Eventually I will have to replace my desktop & when I do, I'll be looking to consolidate media storage so when that happens, I'm thinking about getting a NAS device for hosting my Emby Server instead but I want to know if there's any NAS device recommendations (with a generally large community consensus)? [most important qualities personally are stability & compatibility]
arrbee99 1817 Posted August 15, 2023 Posted August 15, 2023 I have no idea, but would imagine you'd need to establish if any transcoding is required on the NAS. ...and thats about the limit of my knowledge
JoLas 26 Posted August 16, 2023 Posted August 16, 2023 (edited) I own a 8bay Synology DS1821+ with maxed memory and two 1TB m.2 cache drives. I have tried tro run Embyserver directly on the NAS in different configurations but quickly ran out of performance while transcoding. My personal experience is that even an old mini desktop pc has better performance. I'm now using a HP Elitedesk 800 G5 DM for my Embyserver install and it can handle at least 10 simultaneous transcodings. I'm not using any DVR. Now if you're not transcoding or only have a few I think Embyserver on the Synology would work out pretty well. Edited August 16, 2023 by JoLarsson

Interesting cause I'm currently running a HP EliteDesk 800 G2 Mini but I usually only have 1 active stream at a time (2 max) and usually it's DirectPlay or DirectStream but occasionally I fallback to transcoding for manual Roku playback correction Edited August 16, 2023 by Nisten

With the G2 I could run at least 5-6 simultaneous 1080p transcodings without any problems. At that time I didn't have that many users so that was the max I experienced.
AJV_20 57 Posted August 17, 2023 Posted August 17, 2023 I use a Synology NAS and have never had transcoding issues, just make sure you get a CPU with a Celeron. I suggest the 920+ or 1520+ if you want more space
