Teredactle 37 Posted August 10, 2023 Posted August 10, 2023 Hi gang, I picked up recently a Precision 3620 that came with the Nvidia Quadro M2000 card. Although it has a CPU with no graphics I swapped it out for the E3-1245v5 which has graphics built in), My plan is to move Emby to this box - as currently it's running in a Win10 Hyper-V VM on a E3-1225v3, however since it runs in a VM I can't pass the GPU load to it, so the CPU gets tapped out when transcoding is required. My question is whether or not the M2000 is worth keeping, versus using the Quicksync features of the E3-1245v5 using the P530. This is what I'm finding. https://bluesky-soft.com/en/dxvac/deviceInfo/decoder/intel.html https://developer.nvidia.com/video-encode-and-decode-gpu-support-matrix-new BOARD FAMILY NDEC Generation Desktop/ Mobile # OF CHIPS Total # of NVDEC MPEG-1 MPEG-2 VC-1 VP8 VP9 H.264 (AVCHD) H.265 (HEVC) 4:2:0 *H.265 (HEVC) 4:4:4 AV1 8 bit 10 bit 12 bit 8 bit 10 bit 12 bit 8 bit 10 bit 12 bit 8 bit 10 bit Quadro M1000 / M1200 / M2000 Maxwell (1st Gen) 1st Gen M 1 1 YES YES YES NO NO NO NO YES NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO Quadro M2000 Maxwell (GM206) 2nd Gen D 1 1 YES YES YES YES YES NO NO YES YES YES NO NO NO NO NO NO They look pretty much on par, however some preliminary tests (using Jellyfin server - Emby needs permier key and although I have it, I'm not sure about another installation using it even to test, and I don't want to screw up my current installation), when I use the Nvidia card some of the media will not play back, where as if I choose the Intel quicksync, it will play back. Any thoughts on which would be better to use? Alternately, is anyone here passing the GPU to a VM, if so what is your hypervisor? Apparently this isn't possible on Win10, I've quickly tried Vmware Workstation, but it's not working "well".... Thanks and cheers!

Teredactle 37 Posted August 10, 2023 Author Posted August 10, 2023 Excellent, will give it a go, thanks for this info!
Q-Droid 989 Posted August 10, 2023 Posted August 10, 2023 You're better off testing to make sure because some sources say HD P530 can decode HEVC 10-bit but some say it can't. One way to know for sure...
Teredactle 37 Posted August 10, 2023 Author Posted August 10, 2023 (edited) Using test files I found here: Jellyfish Bitrate Test Files (larmoire.info) It's struggling with the last file the HEVC 10Bit 4K, but I'm also encoding with HBBatchbeast so the actual CPU is at 100%. Will test once the CPU has freed up, but the P530 get hit at around 30% once I start playing the test file in a browser. -What I'm seeing though, is that if I remove all the Quicksync entries and force it to use the M2000, BOTH GPUs get used, as well as the CPU. This is very strange.. -If I move the M2000 to the end of the lists (both for 264 and 265) and play the same file, the CPU is less used, and only the P530 gets used, 0% of the M2000.
