mchahn 22 Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 Some shows are only available in 2160p but my setup cannot play those. I have the most recent chromecast/android tv and my server is relatively powerful. I have hw accell and auto thread count set. In any case, I can't play 2160p without freezes. I know I need to down-convert to 1080p but can someone suggest the best way to do that? I assume I cannot do this in emby.
Q-Droid 989 Posted July 31, 2023 Posted July 31, 2023 You can choose the playback quality on the client device to lower the bitrate until you find one that doesn't freeze or stutter. It can be done from the playback OSD and the client settings. Another option is to convert the media in Emby in advance and use the options to save a converted copy or replace the existing one. 1
mchahn 22 Posted July 31, 2023 Author Posted July 31, 2023 I cannot figure out how to do either of your suggestions. No windows client device settings seem to apply video resolution. I don't find that in Display, Playback, or devices. I can't figure out how to convert media in Emby. The conversion tab says "Create download jobs using the Download buttons found throughout the app", but I don't see any such button anywhere. Sorry to be a pain.

During playback, in the bottom right corner of the OSD (on-screen display) -- look for the settings button: Then click on "Quality" and select something from the 1080p range, working your way down the list until you land on a quality setting that no longer freezes or stutters. I would try the above first. Let us know how you go. 1
mchahn 22 Posted July 31, 2023 Author Posted July 31, 2023 Hmm, it says auto 1080p, 6 mbps. So the server tries to down-convert in real time? I can see why that might be a problem for my server. My cpu is an Intel Core i5-5200 which is only medium power. That would explain why my problem is independent of client. So how do I manually convert? I just did some research and found simple ffmpeg commands to do it, but I'm curious how to do it from emby.

In order to use that feature, your user account must have access - enable this for your user account under its profile settings. and then 'Convert' will be available when you right-click on a title, or use the "..." menu on the details page of a movie. I personally would keep copies next to media files before you go replacing them altogether, just to see if you're happy with it first. 3
mchahn 22 Posted July 31, 2023 Author Posted July 31, 2023 Ok, that did the trick. I am so thankful for all the trouble I've put you to. Hopefully this thread will help others.
