multiple show in a folder recgonized as a single show

Hi, I am new emby user and I just setted up my emby server. I have this problem after my first full scan.

my folder structure is like this:

-  NAS

  -  movies

  -  TV shows

so intuitively I setted two libraries regarding to movies and TV shows. however, since some shows are related but not the same show, I want to keep them together because it's easier to manage when I am on my computer, I have subfolders in the TV shows folder like:

 -  NAS

  -  movies

  -  TV shows

    -  MARVEL universe

      -  (all the different shows from MARVEL, because they have way too many shows related to each other and I want to keep them organized)

    -  DC universe

    - Puella Magi Madoka Magica

      -  original show

      - (all the spin-off shows)

    -  (all the independent shows)

but after the first full scan in emby, I see that all the different shows except those independent ones are merged into one show. I only want to keep them in a folder so that I can manage them better on my computer, but I still want them separated in emby. Is there anyway I can tell emby to only merge the same shows, regardless if they are in one folder?

Thanks!

Check out this setting in the settings for the series library:

That said, stacking up extra folder levels within the library is very liable to cause problems with correct recognition in Emby which might catch you out in the future.  To do what you want it would be better to organise things as follows:

TV shows
      Marvel universe
      DC universe
      Madoka universe
Other shows   <------ containing the ones not in the other subfolders.

Then define the library not specifying the "TV shows" folder, but using all of the several subfolders such as "TV shows\Marvel universe" etc (note that a library can have multiple source folders).  This way all the shows can be defined in the way Emby works best with, but you can keep them separately organised as you wish.

Sorry, my bad, my structure is actually like this:

 -  NAS

  -  movies

  -  TV shows

    -  MARVEL universe

      -  (all the different shows from MARVEL, because they have way too many shows related to each other and I want to keep them organized)

    -  DC universe

    - Puella Magi Madoka Magica

      -  original show

      - (all the spin-off shows)

    - independent show 1

    - independent show 2

    -  (all the independent shows...)

My TV has this feature to map all the shows already ant they have been recongnized in that system now, and it provides the function to manually navigate through the folder structure and appoint which folder should be recongnized to which show.

Is there any similar function in emby server?

Thanks!

That is what I understood you to have.  It would be better to place the independent shows under a "Other shows" folder, and then to specify the library folders as:

FOLDERS:
      X:\TV Shows\Marvel universe
      X:\TV Shows\DC universe
      X:\TV Shows\Madoka universe
      X:\TV Shows\Other shows

instead of just TV Shows alone.

No.  The structure is simply a flat list of shows in a library.  You can also specify (in the client) to display a folder view; but this isn't always exactly what you expect, and if you retained your present structure, for instance, while it might work for you now, I'd be worried about other problems later.

Alternatively, you can define each group of shows as a collection, and specify (in the client, again) that collections are shown in the flat list but the individual shows in them are not - that way you can keep your organisation all the way to the user.  But depending on the numbers of shows, it might be as easy to have multiple libraries, one for each group of shows.  There are quite a number of options, you see.

I see... Thank you for the explanation!

Hi.  I concur with PW.  When you do this:

Quote

- Puella Magi Madoka Magica

      -  original show

      - (all the spin-off shows)

    - independent show 1

    - independent show 2

You have created organizational folders at the same level as TV show folders.  It will be nearly impossible for Emby to tell the difference and that is what will trip it up.  So, if you want organizational folders, go ahead and have those but don't try to mix organizational folders together with actual show folders at the same level.

But my movie folder is also like this:

- movies

    -  marvel universe

        -  x-men

            -  (all the x-men movies)

        -  avengers

            -  (all the avengers movies)

        -  (other mavel movies that are not organized w.r.t. the main characters, like docter strange 1, iron man 1...)

    -  dc universe

        -  batman trilogy

            -  (1, 2, 3)

        -  (other dc movies, not organized w.r.t. the main characters, like justice league, the flash)

    -  star war universe

        -  (all star war movies)

    -  (all independent movies)

But my emby server seems to be able to recongonize them all without problem. Why is it only having problem with tv shows?

Movies are easier than shows.

Anyway, I'm sure that Emby will gradually get more flexible in what it can handle; but meanwhile just following their guidelines will solve almost all recognition issues without having to wait for an uncertain future.

Correct but you also may just be getting lucky with the movies.  I would also not try to mix organizational folders and movie folders at the same level there.

I see... thanks the the replies! It's just that my TV already has this feature and it already scanned all my media files as the current structure, so I dont want to change that. The emby server I'm trying to build now is just for my parents to use when they are not in my house... I guess I'll just leave the structure as is for now, my parents wouldn't see those shows anyways, lol.

Oh I see. Sorry for my poor english.

At first I was about to give up since my server was mainly for my parents to watch some Chinese shows. I personnally don't need to use it to watch. But then it occurred to me if I could to create some hard links for those files in another folder outside of my tv show folder (I tried creating soft links but didn't work)

Firstly I created the .ignore file in those organizational folders, then I created a folder named "hard_links" outside of the tv show folder. Then I copied the organizational folders in the hard_links folder as in the tv show folder and created hard links for every single file in there except for the .ignore files. Then I added each organizational folders to my tv show library and let it scan. And it totally worked! But it is just a workaround and doesn't look pretty😂
