I would like to see better folder structure recognition

In my honest opinion, I think Emby could definitely use a little better folder recognition due to some files "escaping" to other seasons or other movies altogether.

For example, there's a video of a storyboard w/audio that comes with a Chowder (2007) DVD. I added it to Season 0 with the title "Chowder's Girlfriend Storyboard" and Emby automatically added it to Season 1 in the app with the title "S1:E2 Chowder's Girlfriend."

I know that changing the name of the file is a simple fix but if I explicitly create/organize subfolders, shouldn't Emby be able know that files in "Season 0" shouldn't show up in any other season?

I have another example of a documentary in a movie's "featurettes" subfolder getting parsed as a completely separate movie due to either the file name itself or the fact that the "featurettes" folder was capitalized at the time.

If I'm missing something, do let me know but if not, I'd like this to be a feature request or bug fix.

How is your file named in your filesystem, as it has to have to have some sort of identifier in order to be parsed properly?

Edit: BTW, @Carlo, formatting in TV Naming KB article is all over the place, starting from

## Complex Folder Structure

Sections are not clear, lots of text is inverted.

Multi-version movies section header also snuck in.

I just realized my Season 0 folder was in my Season 1 folder.  smh

but I did have a problem where a documentary called “Saving The Surf Documentary.mkv” in the “Featurettes” subfolder under “The Spongebob Squarepants Movie (2004)” was getting treated as a separate movie entirely. I fixed that problem by either renaming the “Featurettes” (capital F) folder to “featurettes” or renaming the file to “Saving The Surf.mkv”

That second problem is valid though; Whether I named the subfolder incorrectly or the file itself, it shouldn’t have gotten labelled as a separate movie.

Which server version?

I’ve been through that guide a few times and never noticed the special episode naming schemes. Is that new?

I’ve been doing these by memory for a month or so

4.7.13.0

After fixing my first problem, and moving the Season 0 folder out of the Season 1 folder, that episode now shows up in BOTH Season 0 AND Season 1 after the a manual library scan

Windows or Linux?

Settings>Library>Advanced tab, untick "Display specials within season they aired in" or delete placement metadata (Airs during Season/Airs before episode) in item three-dot menu>Edit Metadata dialog.

Then what should it have been labeled as? Should it have just disappeared instead?

I think we're doing the right thing, where if it doesn't follow the naming conventions for specials, then it becomes it's own movie.

I completely understand where you’re coming from as it enforces good naming conventions but shouldn’t it default to the filename while staying in its respective season?

I’m in no way trying to argue, I’m honestly just trying to find out for sure if it’s a fault by me or a bug in Emby

The Library>Advanced step didn’t fix it and the second option isn’t available because it’s being treated as a Season 1 episode, not as a special.

I’m on Rocky Linux

Your comment was not about TV, it was about movies, and so that's why my response was about.

Sorry, two topics at once…

Still though, if it’s placed in a subfolder within a movie’s folder, even though it’s misnamed, it should default to it’s original filename and stay in the “extras” section, right?

To me, misnaming a file should be a nonissue and stay in the subdirectory I left it in. Being out of order in a movie’s “Extras” category due to an incorrect naming convention is one thing but it getting moved to a completely different movie is another.

That is my feature request: For Emby to default to the filename and stay in the directory it’s stored in with no metadata, if the naming convention isn’t correct.

Without looking at a specific example it's hard to comment, but we also support multiple movies together in single folders, not to mention multiple parts, and multiple versions. The only way to make all of these things work together is by having naming conventions. You follow the naming conventions for extras, you get extras. Anything else and it's hard to automatically guess and come up with the right answer for everyone and so that's why it gets treated as a separate movie.

I totally understand! Of course, I can’t recreate the exact example but I’ll just take your word for it!

Thank you for listening to what I had to say LOL

In other words, it seems simple enough to you that it's a single movie folder with extras in it, but the server has to be able to figure that out. It could also just be a mish-mash of random video files, which is also supported. So that's why when you ask why can't the server treat the misnamed folder as an extra, because to you that's an extra under the movie folder, but to someone else that could be something random, and therefore it's no longer a single movie folder.

Oh, we may be mixed up. To be clear, here’s an example directory:

(Folder) Movie Title (2005)

|
—— Movie Title (2005).mkv

|
—— (Folder) Extras

      |
      |—— Misnamed Extra.mkv

I know its not always this simple but I’m thinking along the lines of:

If ( file name isn’t correct )

{
do not create metadata

videoTitle = filename

Sort by {current subfolder} (this would depend on working naming conventions for folders however.)

}

Right ok, under the extras folder there is no naming required. It can be anything you want. The naming conventions under that folder only help the server determine what type of extra it is.

Should be fixed now.

Carlo

Looking good now, though unwanted section header/text still present:

Multi-version movies

Multiple versions of the same content can be stored in a single movie folder.

and no more used Unset content type mentioned under Mixed-content libraries.

Mixed Content Libraries

TV series are supported in mixed content libraries using the Unset content type, but season sub-folders are required in this scenario.

Until I started to use Sonarr I had these kinds of problems.

I now use Sonarr to manage my files - I now even have the tvdbid in each folder (Sonarr does that autmatically) - it manages itself.

Strongly recommend using Sonarr to manage the library - automatic renaming will make the library spotlessly consistent. It will save a lot of headaches.
