Landoman 20 Posted July 14, 2023 Posted July 14, 2023 I have a main file server that it like to turn off at night. I purchased a smaller server to use for automation and found it is quite power and I could use it to view media. However the issue is the media is mostly on the main file server. If I install emby on the smaller server and use that as the main installation, will it refresh the media when the main server starts up? Also is there a suggestion as to how I could save the latest files on the smaller server, ie the latest episodes for TV and that way allow the main server to shutdown? Any suggestions as to why the best way to approach this? Drivepool? File copy/sharing? @Carlo I want the smaller server to just deal with the latest, most recent files and items watched
Carlo 4561 Posted July 27, 2023 Posted July 27, 2023 I don't see you gaining anything from this if the most of the content is on the main server. You would need to have access to all content for Emby to work properly. Carlo
rbjtech 5284 Posted July 27, 2023 Posted July 27, 2023 The idea of storage Tiering is one I have been looking at fairly recently. Moving 'recent' activity to SSD and powering down 'Archive' HDD's is the dream - it's doable from a file system perspective (DrivePool etc) but unfortunately emby spoils the show because it still wants to check the file during a library scan. There may be a way using strm files - but it would be messy. Still looking into this myself tbh. In short, until emby get onboard with a 'Tiering' approach to media (with seperate scans that don't scan/remove 'archive' libraries for example) then it's going to be complex to achieve what you really want to do using seperate servers or libraries ...
nunu22 2 Posted December 16, 2023 Posted December 16, 2023 Hi, that could be a great fonctionnality and will feet Unraid server like a charm (cold storage + cache) i guess it would be something that can work as follow: define the size of the cache same option than for download feature select what you want to download to the cache and rules (latest etc...) if cache full, erase less recent files emby server sets a flag to a video in in the cache and uses the cache to provide stream by this way, this feature could maintain HDD in spindown more often regards 1 1
