AV1 Files Not Playing on New Sony Google TV

I have Emby Version 4.7.13.0 loaded directly native on my Sony TV (late 2022 model purchased in April 2023). All other file types play perfectly. TV is connected to server via ethernet at @ 80-100 mb dl speeds. Everything I've read says my TV supports AV1, so I am wondering if this is an Emby issue?

All AV1 files transcode and stutter and freeze. They are unplayable. Any help?

Thanks!

Hi.  Can you try sideloading our standard android app on the same device and see how that compares?

Thanks.

Hey Luke! I'm pretty sure that's what I originally installed on the TV from the Google Play store. Do you want me to uninstall/reinstall or do something different? Thanks

That's our TV app. You can leave it installed. Can you try sideloading the app that I linked  you to? Thanks.

Sorry, I'm not following. Guess I need to read Sideloading for Dummies. You want me to do this on the TV? When I search Google Play apps on the TV, the only Emby app I see is the Android TV app. How do I locate the other one?

Click on the link provided above by Luke.

Download the APK. Side loading involves you installing that APK on your device outside of the PlayStore.

Here are just a couple of ways you can do that: How to sideload apps

If you are going to sideload - then sideload the Beta version of your current AndroidTV App (2.0.88) as well - as that now uses exactly the same Exoplayer - so may work as well.  AV1 is supported - but I've only tested on a FireTV 4K Max, not a Google TV device.

Thanks as always for your help and patience. I'm not tech savvy and this is my first Smart TV. Two concussions has also made me a little slow to absorb these things.

Since I need to do this outside of Google Play, it sounds like I need to open a browser (on my PC or TV?), then go to the link Luke provided and download one of the APK choices. How do I know which one? My PC is x64, so can I assume I should download x64, not arm64?

After that it sounds like I need to sideload, but the link about sideloading lost me in the first paragraph. Can I just put the downloaded file from my PC to a USB, then load the USB to my TV? If not, perhaps there is an easier way to describe how to do the sideload?

Hi, you should have no issues downloading the arm7 APK for your Sony TV. Remember you are downloading for the TV's architecture, not your PC.

Your best bet at sideloading would be to use an app you can download from the Play Store on your TV called 'Send Files to TV' -- here is a nice guide to step you through the process of doing that. https://www.howtogeek.com/694493/how-to-sideload-apps-on-google-tv/

Good luck and let us know how you go.

Should I download the arm7 APK on my PC or phone?

I followed instructions in the link to download "Send Files to TV" on my phone but there are 4 "versions" of that app and I'm not sure which one to download. The only difference I see is that two are marked Bundle 19S and two are marked APK and have a monitor icon. How do I choose?

Thanks again. This is a new one for me.

Sorry, I'm not following. Please ignore your PC for now.

  1. Install (from the Play Store) the "Send Files to TV" app on both your Sony TV device and your phone device. Do that first. The device will only install the version it needs.
  2. Now, from your phone, follow the link Luke provided and only download the arm7 APK as I previously indicated.
  3. Open the "Send Files" files app on your Sony TV, grant it access if asked, and hit the big "RECEIVE" button
  4. Now open the same app on your phone, grant it access, and hit the big "SEND" button ...then locate the APK file you just downloaded and "send" it to your Sony TV which is currently waiting to "receive" files.

Once the file has been successfully sent to your Sony TV, you can select it to "Open" it ...follow the remaining steps in the guide to install it.

Hope that helps.

THANK YOU. Sorry you had to write all that out, but thanks to your instructions, I was finally able to complete my first sideload successfully.

Unfortunately, after all that, running the sideloaded emby-for-android app has unfortunately not solved my problem with AV1 playback. The AV1 files are still stuttering, which usually starts within the first 10 seconds of playback.

If there's anything else I can try, please let me know. Thanks again.

Hi there, let's look at an example. Please attach the information requested in how to report a media playback issue. Thanks!

The pics below are from the original emby TV app.

I was unable to bring up Stats for Nerds on the Android app I sideloaded.

I will try and figure out the logs next.

Looks like Sony may not support the OPUS Audio codec ?

I can't actually see any evidence it supports AV1 either ...  🙄

From the Sony SONY XR-55A90J specifications ...

Quote

MPEG1:MPEG1/MPEG2PS:MPEG2/MPEG2TS(HDV,AVCHD):MPEG2,AVC/MP4(XAVC S):AVC,MPEG4,HEVC/AVI:Xvid,MotionJpeg/ASF(WMV):VC1/MOV:AVC,MPEG4,MotionJpeg/MKV:Xvid,AVC,MPEG4,VP8.HEVC/WEBM:VP8/3GPP:MPEG4,AVC/MP3/ASF(WMA)/LPCM/WAV/MP4AAC/FLAC/JPEG;WEBM:VP9/AC4/ogg/AAC/ARW(Screen nail only)

?

I would suggest sticking with HEVC/h265 (or AVC/h264) Video and EAC3 or AC3 Audio - these are well supported codecs.  AV1 is still very much in it's infancy - and without experience/AV encoding knowledge you are likely to hit roadblocks many times when attempting to use it ...

Yes I'm not surprised as I doubt your TV has enough power to decode AV1 in software.  Also, from your images, it appears your server is not powerful enough to convert it fast enough.  You are only getting 28fps which explains the buffering.
