fbrassin 47 Posted July 8, 2023 Posted July 8, 2023 Hello, these days i'm asking if there is a way to do this. After watching a movie that i don't want to keep i delete movie file. Is there a way the keep it in library, so that if, for example, i look for an actor in emby i can see he also made that movie i deleted? I hope i explaned well what i wanted to say
GrimReaper 4748 Posted July 8, 2023 Posted July 8, 2023 Create a strm file instead of real video file and item will stay in your library.
fbrassin 47 Posted July 8, 2023 Author Posted July 8, 2023 Can you please give some more info. How to do it?
GrimReaper 4748 Posted July 8, 2023 Posted July 8, 2023 Create an empty txt file named same as video file, change extension from .txt to .strm. https://emby.media/support/articles/Strm-Files.html
Solution rbjtech 5284 Posted July 8, 2023 Solution Posted July 8, 2023 I was thinking it would be better to create a stub file - that way, if somebody attempts to play it - it won't error. https://emby.media/support/articles/Media-Stubs.html

crusher11 1102 Posted July 8, 2023 Posted July 8, 2023 Yep, that's what I do. And I keep them in a separate library only I can access.
fbrassin 47 Posted July 8, 2023 Author Posted July 8, 2023 OK, that is a good solution. And now. If i create .disc file for each movie in the library, is there a way emby shows me just one movie if i have both .mkv file and .disc file? And play .mkv file if present instead of .disc file?

fbrassin 47 Posted July 9, 2023 Author Posted July 9, 2023 My deal is automatically create .disc file for each movie i have, so after watching movie i can just delete .mkv file without losing my movie from library.

It will prompt you to 'insert a disk' (lol) if you try and play it. a .strm on the other hand, actually points to a playable media item held elsewhere on your system - it could be in another emby library, or it could not be part of emby at all. This can be a url or a unc file location. It should not be part of the same emby library, as this causes issues. I'm not aware of any automated way to replace a real media file with a .disc file once the file has been deleted - but I guess this could be done with some form of post processing script.

Why not just create the disc file when you delete the MKV?

Because, these days i have to delete many movie files to make new space on HD and i didn't want to manually do it as it would take much time, so i thought to create .disc files for all the movies and then delete the movie mkv files i will not watch anymore.
crusher11 1102 Posted July 10, 2023 Posted July 10, 2023 But you already have to delete the MKV files, creating the .disc files takes about two extra seconds.
