MrGoutHimself 3 Posted July 5, 2023 Posted July 5, 2023 I have all my movies and TV shows on a drive that is connected to a Windows 11 computer that I'm using as an Emby server. It seems that most movies will play flawlessly for 35 minutes and then start to stutter or freeze, the sound seems unaffected. I have a copy of the files on a drive the same exact size that hosts Plex, which doesn't have these issues. I'm watching from a Chromecast with Google TV dongle in the next room from the server, both are on Ethernet in my home network. The drives are both in an enclosure attached to the server with USB 3. Logs attached, anyone have any idea why this keeps happening? I much prefer Emby but not if I can't make it through an entire movie. embyserver.txt

Solution ebr 16187 Posted July 5, 2023 Solution Posted July 5, 2023 Hi. Is this an AVI file by any chance? If you use the "Playback Correction" option in the app to force a transcode before that 35 minute mark, does it play past it properly? 1

I will to the "playback correction" this afternoon on one of them and see if this corrects the issue. Thank you for the suggestion. -D 1
visproduction 316 Posted July 5, 2023 Posted July 5, 2023 I believe AVI video files can be too old for Window support and probably cause problems with conversion. I think the easiest fix is to not use AVI videos or convert them to mp4. Windows 10 standard loaded video codecs are: Quote Video Codecs Type Name Format Binary Version ICM Cinepak Codec by Radius cvid iccvid.dll 1.10.0.12 ICM Intel IYUV codec IYUV iyuv_32.dll 10.0.19041.1 ICM Microsoft RLE MRLE msrle32.dll 10.0.19041.1 ICM Microsoft Video 1 MSVC msvidc32.dll 10.0.19041.1 ICM Microsoft YUV UYVY msyuv.dll 10.0.19041.1 ICM Toshiba YUV Codec Y411 tsbyuv.dll 10.0.19041.1 ICM Microsoft YUV UYVY msyuv.dll 10.0.19041.1 DMO Mpeg4s Decoder DMO mp4s, MP4S, m4s2, M4S2, MP4V, mp4v, XVID, xvid, DIVX, DX50 mp4sdecd.dll 10.0.19041.1706 DMO WMV Screen decoder DMO MSS1, MSS2 wmvsdecd.dll 10.0.19041.1 DMO WMVideo Decoder DMO WMV1, WMV2, WMV3, WMVA, WVC1, WMVP, WVP2, VC1S wmvdecod.dll 10.0.19041.2604 DMO Mpeg43 Decoder DMO mp43, MP43 mp43decd.dll 10.0.19041.1165 DMO Mpeg4 Decoder DMO MPG4, mpg4, mp42, MP42 mpg4decd.dll 10.0.19041.1165 Comments online seem to say that Windows 11 does not support AVI video. You can look up your installed codecs with in Windows with this: Quote How can I find out which codecs are installed on my PC? On the Help menu in Windows Media Player, select About Windows Media Player. If you don't see the Help menu, select Organize > Layout > Show menu bar. In the About Windows Media Player dialog box, select Technical Support Information. Your web browser will open a page that includes a lot of detailed info about the related binary files, codecs, filters, plug-ins, and services installed on your PC. This info should help you troubleshoot problems. From this page: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/codecs-faq-392483a0-b9ac-27c7-0f61-5a7f18d408af
ebr 16187 Posted July 5, 2023 Posted July 5, 2023 Yeah, I don't understand where these AVI files of recent content are coming from. That container should have died a decade ago... 1
MrGoutHimself 3 Posted July 5, 2023 Author Posted July 5, 2023 I have checked one AVI file where playback correction did indeed correct the freezing/stuttering video, and the other AVI I converted to MKV with Handbrake and it similarly did not freeze or stutter. Thank you for the suggestion, I'm probably going to convert any remaining AVI files to MKV to prevent this being an issue. I'm very glad I should be able to dump Plex even as a fallback again. 2
