Are Username and Display Name one and the same?

Is there a display name feature I'm not finding or are usernames and display names one and the same?

I see the following, which also seems to be used for the username:

Seems a bit odd to combine them, if that's the case.

I'll look into adding a feature request, if "Separate the Username from Display Name", hasn't already been added.
