Versions from multiple shows are being merged into one show's episodes

This is a really weird issue I'm having...

I just updated and looked over some of my media, and TV shows started merging episodes of the same numbering together into one episode of another show. Seems completely random. But it's affecting many of the shows. Here's an example...

image.thumb.png.b39fbff68db6baf784147d9c2fbb7704.png

One episode of Skip and Loafer is being version matched with 6 other shows of the same episode numbering.

Futurama episode 3 of Season 1 got matched with like 12 other shows.... So confusing... I have to use the 'split media versions' button on every single one I happen to stumble upon.

Is this something I misconfigured? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

Notes: I just updated to 4.7.13.0 when I noticed, not sure if it was happening before hand or not. Though, this is the first I started noticing it.

Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description:    Ubuntu 20.04.6 LTS
Release:        20.04
Codename:       focal

Should probably mention, all the files are not the same folder. Folder structure is managed by Sonarr/Radarr, and are tagged/labeled according to TrAsH's guide.

How are your files organized? Do you have an additional layer in your TV shows root folder, like alphabet subfolders or year subfolders or similar?

They are organized by Sonarr using Trash's guide.

{Series TitleYear} {imdb-{ImdbId}}/Season {season:00}

An example: TV\Heavenly Delusion (2023) [imdbid-tt22817632]\Season 01

Though I've been using this for many months now and haven't had any issue like this happen before.

TrAsH is actually wrong there, as that is JF scheme that doesn't apply to Emby, Providerid in folder name uses "=" as in:

Quote

TV\Heavenly Delusion (2023) [imdbid=tt22817632]\Season 01

(note the equal sign).

I've already raised an issue to include that in KB TV naming article, still pending:

TV Naming · Issue #2 · EmbySupport/Emby.Docs · GitHub

As far as Emby is concerned, those Meta-IDs might just as well not be there at all, since they're not read in that naming scheme (and maybe/possibly confusing parser).

Don't know how feasible would it be for you to rename all of your series folders replacing dash with equal, but that would be proper course of action (note that that is a destructive action as your library would have to be rebuilt).

Interesting...

I suppose I'll look into doing it. Sonarr has the ability to reorganize everything, including root folders and such. But yeah, either way at this point it looks like a library rebuild. Everything is mixing and matching together at this point. Though I don't know if it will be the fix for it. Good catch on your part though. Looks like they got a PR in place for it... but it'll probably be versions later for it to be implemented.

We'll be adding support for the dash convention in the upcoming 4.8 release, although I'm not sure that's the issue here.

Does the Love, Death and Robots series exist in your emby library, and is episode 12 not listed under there?

Yeah, it's really confusing...

Episodes listed as a version of another show's episodes can be visited and viewed, and then you can switch to their cross referenced versions on either show lol.

image.png.12141bada68f467cb98a66778ceacd30.png

Just to give you more info on how it's presenting...

Each 'version' is also shown as media info.

image.png.b41a120b359b39751bf984087c0c9c4f.png

This is the button I was talking about before as well. When I click it I get this message.

image.png.179049d582e355e51655d094c9d0a3e6.png

Clicking the button 'resolves' the issue, for that episode.... But then I have to find all the other references and split them as well.

Edit: Should clerify, if I 'split versions' it resolves the issue for all episodes of that 'versioning' issue. So if I split the Skip and Loafer episode as shown in the first picture, all other episodes that were listed as a 'version' are also split and do not show the multiple version as shown in the House and The Dragon and Star Trek episode pictures.

OK we'll take a look at this. Thanks.

Is there any way to just tell Emby to split everything back up?

None of the media I have should be merged into versions, is there is an easy to way to split everything up again?

The split media apart button will do that.

Yeah... but it's hundreds of random episodes man... There's no list telling me which ones have another version that I can find... I was hoping there would be a one time fix lol

If you uncheck the library option to merge series and then run a library scan, does that resolve it?

Hello Luke, happy new year (to all of you guys)!

my problem here:

Directory-Tree:

- The Good Doctor
- The Good Cop

Both merged in library into "The Good Doctor". I did not manage it to seperate/split them except using your hint to uncheck the merge series option and rescan. As my library cointains 1500 series, you can imagine how long it took to seperate them just for a re-recognize and checking that box again for a re-merge. Incoming/Archive is seperated. The way its actually handelded by Emby is NOT very user friendly tbh, but maybe i did something wrong?

@benZol

TV Naming  is you friend.

You Can also help emby by adding (year) and tvdbid to the folder.

Folder : V (1984) [TvdbId=76354]

Try this

- The Good Doctor - The Good Doctor - TheTVDB.com
The Good Doctor (2017) [TvdbId=328634]

Now look up - The Good Cop there are a some with the same name.

 Search - TheTVDB.com

Jellyfin ok, Plex ok, Emby not ok - must be naming. I'll try your hint the next time i cannot split a wrong matched series, even when they have totally different paths. Thanks 💪

I'm surprised they got merged. But yes if you at least put the series year into the folder name as mentioned above, that will prevent this most of the time.
