Multiple version movie video dropdown box not present

I came across an oddity, and I'm not sure if it's a bug, a configuration issue, or by design. Here are the details:

Environment: Multiple users, most with full access to all library content regardless of parental rating except two users who are restricted due to their age. These two are restricted to TV-Y/APPROVED/G/E/EC/TV-G. I use the metadata manager for movies that are above these ratings and edit the Custom Rating to APPROVED. Many movies have multiple versions available, typically 1080p and 4k and they are all in the same movies library.

Issue: These two restricted users do not have the dropdown box to select which video version, 1080p or 4k, to watch. They only have the 4k version. All other users, who do not have any parental control restrictions, have the dropdown box. If I change the parental control rating to PG/TV-PG for these two users, then the dropdown box becomes available.

Example: Encanto has a parental rating of PG. Since it is higher than TV-Y/APPROVED/G/E/EC/TV-G, I set the Custom Rating to APPROVED. Encanto shows up in the library for my child. Encanto has been ripped in both 1080p and 4k versions. My child does not get to select the 1080p version because the dropdown box is not available. It only plays the 4k version. If I change my child's parental rating in their parental control setting to PG/TV-PG, then the dropdwon box is available so they can select 1080p or 4k.

I know there are some workarounds I can do, such as placing 4k and 1080p movies into separate libraries and granting access appropriately, or selecting PG/TV-PG and then blacklisting those movies that I don't feel are PG, such as war movies, but it's a lot of extra work. I would think that if the movie has a custom rating of APPROVED and the movie shows up in the child's library, then the different video versions would be available, too.

Any ideas?

hi there, can you please provide a specific example? how are your files named and organized?

@LukeI have a single movie library, each movie in its own folder with the naming format shown in the KB. Using Encanto as an example, the paths are \\server\media\videos\movies\E\Encanto (2021)\Encanto (2021) - 1080p.mkv and \\server\media\videos\movies\E\Encanto (2021)\Encanto (2021) - 4k.mkv. Since it is a PG movie, I add a custom rating of APPROVED in Metadata Manager and the movie shows up in my child's library. If my child's Parental Control Maximum Allowed Parental Rating is set to TV-Y/APPROVED/G/E/EC/TV-G, only the 4k version is available to watch and the Video dropdown box is not available. If I change the maximum allowed parental rating to PG/TV-PG, then both the 1080p and 4k versions are available via the Video dropdown box.

Update: I removed the parental rating restriction for my child's user account, but added a tag called "kid-friendly" and allowed only that media with the tag. Then, I added the tag to all movies that I want to present to the child library. Only those movies are displaying in the library, but the Video version dropdown is non-existant and only the 4k version is there.

Another update: Removed the parental rating restriction for the child account, but added a tag called "adult-oriented" and blocked all media with that tag. Added the tag to all movies that I deemed adult-oriented. Checked the child library, and the Video version is now selectable in movies like Encanto, but some movies are showing up when they shouldn't be. Oddly, when I look at the movie when logged in as the child, the tag isn't there, but if I log in with my account, the tag is there. Maybe my database is just FUBAR and needs a complete rebuild?

Hi, because they're actually two separate library items, both need to meet the parental control criteria. Does that answer your question?

That makes sense, but Metadata Manager only shows the path to one version. In most cases, it is the 4k version but in others, it is the 1080p version.

You should be able to get to them each separately, right?

In a file manager or terminal? Yes. Both versions are in the same movie folder, but Metadata Manager only shows one video in the folder.

@Idajavathis is a workflow we'll have to look at improving for merged videos. For now I would split them using the controls at the bottom of the detail screen, then edit the tags for both, and then merge them back together. Please let us know if this helps. Thanks.
