sjsadowski 0 Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 This is a weird one, but something I'm struggling with. I have subtitles set to none on my player device(s) but the forced subtitles are still playing unless I disable them individually while watching an episode. For reference, I'm watching a series with three English subtitle tracks, one set to forced. On the individual episodes, I can set subtitles to none after they start playing, and that is respected, but my user selection of 'None' is not respected for Emby clients - confirmed on Windows, iOS, and AndroidTV. Further, if I visit individual episodes and set the subtitle as 'Off' from the episode page, when I visit it again, the selection is reverted to forced. This, too, happens across clients. Finally, if I am watching an episode, set subtitles to off while within that episode, they stay off... unless I leave the emby client and come back. In that case, the titles revert back to the forced subtitles. Is there anything that I can do that will make Emby server and clients respect my subtitle selection of None?

sjsadowski 0 Posted June 19, 2023 Author Posted June 19, 2023 Originally reported here, autoreply suggested to report in specific forums. I'm starting with this one, even though this issue exists across clients. --- This is a weird one, but something I'm struggling with. sjsadowski 0 Posted June 19, 2023 Author Posted June 19, 2023 Per the suggested post, I've also reported this issue here.
GrimReaper 4749 Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 Which server version? 3 hours ago, sjsadowski said: if I visit individual episodes and set the subtitle as 'Off' from the episode page, when I visit it again, the selection is reverted to forced That is expected behavior, if you haven't played an item (even for few seconds), pre-selection reverts to your preferred Subtitle Mode - issue is not why it's not sticking but why it's selecting Forced subs if you've opted for No subtitles. 3 hours ago, sjsadowski said: if I am watching an episode, set subtitles to off while within that episode, they stay off... unless I leave the emby client and come back. That is odd and it should've been remembered (unless you have "Remember subtitle track selection" unticked in Settings>Subtitles when it should revert to preferred Mode).
sjsadowski 0 Posted June 19, 2023 Author Posted June 19, 2023 Server version is 4.7.11.0 running on a Synology NAS. 9 minutes ago, GrimReaper said: That is expected behavior, if you haven't played an item (even for few seconds), pre-selection reverts to your preferred Subtitle Mode - issue is not why it's not sticking but why it's selecting Forced subs if you've opted for No subtitles. Yes, that was one of the first things I did, was set subs to 'None' for my user. 10 minutes ago, GrimReaper said: That is odd and it should've been remembered (unless you have "Remember subtitle track selection" unticked in Settings>Subtitles when it should revert to preferred Mode). 'remember subtitle track selection' is ticked. I grabbed the attached from the web interface, but have ensured it is consistent on my client devices.
GrimReaper 4749 Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 Cannot reproduce on 4.7.11.0, all modes behaving as expected in my tests, though I'm running a Win server, maybe it's something platform-specific as that should not be occurring under those conditions, @Luke?
sjsadowski 0 Posted June 19, 2023 Author Posted June 19, 2023 Happy to provide whatever info I can to help identify the issue, or correct it on my side if it can be determined what I'm doing wrong. I'm still working under the assumption that this is my problem and I've messed something up somewhere.
GrimReaper 4749 Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 If you select some other language (that you have no subtitles available - or some language very unlikely that you'll have) as preferred, does it default to No subs then?
sjsadowski 0 Posted June 19, 2023 Author Posted June 19, 2023 Out of pure amusement I have set my preferred audio language to Estonian and my preferred subtitle language to Luxembourgish. It still seems to default to English (which is the default audio track) and forced english subs. So it is still not following the assumed configuration.

Audio is OK as there's no Estonian track - and it cannot select NO track, so it defaults to available audio, but subs should not be pre-selected, it should default to Off, as Luxembourgish subs is N/A (assuming that is an unplayed item); have you tried Clearing saved track selection in Sub settings? ebr 16187 Posted June 19, 2023 Posted June 19, 2023 Hi. More than likely it is remembering a previous selection. Try clicking that button that says "Clear saved track selections" and see what happens.

I have just now tried this, no change. Interestingly I have just checked another series and the defaults. When there is only an English language track (one audio track) it works fine - default is to off, however when there are multiple audio tracks, in my case the series I checked are English and Japanese, then the series defaults to the forced subs.
