tzubairi 0 Posted June 7, 2023 Posted June 7, 2023 Hi, I'm a new Emby user. Trying to see if it's better than Plex which I've used for many years. I'm having issues with Emby file indexing and Metadata that I don't have with Plex. My files are being sourced from the same movie & TV show folders in Plex and Emby, so the file /folder structure is the same some folders are even poorly named like That.Damn.Michael.Che.S02.1080p.HMAX.WEBRip.DD5.1.x264-KOGi[rartv] but Plex can clearly figure it out.. In Plex a TV show, for example, Succession is all showing up together even though there are different folders for seasons in the source files and then when I open the show the seasons are separate as they should be, and it's pulling the correct metadata (pictures, descriptions, etc.). I don't need to modify anything. Works perfectly. In Emby it's not pulling the metadata for most TV shows and the seasons for shows are not grouped together. For the few it has been done correctly, I had to manually change the metadata details. Does anyone know a fix? I want to switch to Emby but if I have to index manually I'll stick to Plex. I've attached Plex and Emby screenshots for reference. Thanks

pwhodges 2012 Posted June 7, 2023 Posted June 7, 2023 Emby cares more about folder structure, I think is the main difference. As Emby prefers a relatively clean structure, a layout that works in Emby will, I believe) also work in Plex. I would recommend as a start simply gathering the folders of separate seasons of a single series into a folder named for just the series itself. Emby will probably be able to figure out the seasons from the naming you already have. If it still fails, then maybe just renaming the season folders will then make the difference. For my part, I always ensure that the actual videos include s01e01 etc explicitly in their names, to eliminate possible ambiguities. https://emby.media/support/articles/TV-Naming.html If renaming of video files is still necessary, then a bulk renamer is a good move, either something like Bulk Rename Utility (which is how I do it) or one of the programs which rename media files according to clear rules such as FileBot. tzubairi 0 Posted June 7, 2023 Author Posted June 7, 2023 Thanks for the advice. However, if the functionality is the same between Endy and Plex and one seems to do the indexing and metadata info seamlessly by default there will be a preference to use Plex which does not require any manual adjustments or changing a file/folder structure
pwhodges 2012 Posted June 7, 2023 Posted June 7, 2023 How did your present structure arise, though? Surely there was nothing inevitable about it. OK, Emby requires a little more curation in some circumstances, but most people manage that OK. Paul
tzubairi 0 Posted June 7, 2023 Author Posted June 7, 2023 Fair enough. I guess I've been spoilt by Plex since I can dump files/folders in any structure and it manages to figure out the indexing and metadata. I wanted to try Emby because it has a single feature that Plex doesn't, faster playback speed but I value the seamless indexing more so I'll stick to Plex.
