Music video artist information not populating

Recommended Posts

So I've been working on getting a new Music Video library set up. I tore it down and rebuilt it a couple of times trying to get the folder view to work. I've given up on that now, but now I have a new problem: at one point in my testing, artist information in the Artist view definitely was populated. It had images of the artists and if you selected an artist or music video there was a back drop.

Something I've done has broken that.

Song information is, kind of, pulling in via IMVDB. A lot of the things I have are I guess not broadly popular like Theoz or Daði Freyr (both of whom are known to at least tens of millions of people). I don't necessarily expect those to pull in from IMVDB, although Leo Moracchioli (with a similar audience) did. That being said, even the less well know artists still populated pictures.

Was there a task that did this previously rather than IMVDB? Do I need to delete metadata from somewhere to force an Emby rescan so it will create/download the pictures again? When I say I have torn down and rebuilt the library several times, I mean that I have completely deleted and recreated it. I broke something somewhere, and try as I might I just can't get these artist images to populate again.

Thanks for any help.

Hi, did you set Artist names for videos using the metadata editor? Try doing that.

Yes, and I also tried adding them as 'People' in that section. No change.

I believe that the in metadata editor for Music Videos, "Artists" link to music library artists and the "People" section links to movie/TV library people. For artist info to show up, the names in the "Artist" field of the metadata needs to be exactly the same as the Artist being used in your music library. IMVDB, like many other open databases is reliant on user submissions, which is why they have such large gaps in their information. Even the information that is there is often suspect. I would wager that if you are using IMVDB then it may have guessed at incorrect artists when trying to match your videos and populated bad values. Beyond that, there are all sorts of inconsistencies in naming between IMVDB and (for example) MusicBrainz such as "The B52's," "B-52's," "B-52s," etc. If the spelling or punctuation is off, then it won't connect to the music library.

For my Music Video collection, I've taken to either creating NFO data from music metadata sources, using emby screen grabs for image sources, or just manually curating the data. The only real good sources for music video data is the IMDB or Wikipedia, but there's no easy way to get at it. If I ever have some extra time I may contribute some stuff to the IMVDV, but I can never seem to get to it. Hope that helps.

@Tremasthanks for the tips. I've had nothing but issues with the Music Videos library type. I'm not upset about IMVDB, I can understand why that's in disarray. But, like I said in the first post artist information and images populated at some point but now I can't figure out how to get them back that way. And, the folder view never worked, no matter what I tried.

Needs some work all around it seems.

OK, and what exactly is the problem with this particular music video?

There's nothing wrong with the video. It plays fine. Maybe they were just generated by Emby via a scheduled task? Or was there a task that did this previously rather than IMVDB?

I have music from Nicki Minaj for example. She has a fully populated profile on IMVDB. Her artist page in Emby is emby. No picture, no anything.

Could this be related to your metadata fetchers? If you look at the Music Video library setup, there is no "Artist" metadata options for IMVDV. I believe the artist images and info just matches to artists already in your music library. Do you have a music library set up? Is Nicki Minaj an artist in your music library? What happens if you click on the three dot menu from the image above and select "identify" for Nicki Minaj? I think it will use whatever metadata sources are set up for your music library (assuming you have one).

Thanks @Tremasfor this good feedback. Alas, I do not now nor have I ever had a music library set up.  I'm not even sure that the information was pulling from IMVDB previously, it could have just been auto generated by some Emby task.

Kind of confusingly, this:

Glad we're making progress. Ok, if you have never done the identify task before, you can enter the title of the artist and it will search whatever metadata sources you have set up. Put Nicki Minaj in the "title" block and see if it finds any info for you.

Because a Music Video is a hybrid of Music and Movie libraries, it will search for "People" information just like a movie, but not Artists (I think). The metadata options for "People" (not artists) in a music video library are IMVDB and TheMoiveDB, which are mostly movie related. You won't find much in TheMoiveDB for groups such as "The Police" but you will find entries for Sting since he has appeared in plenty of movies and shows. I believe the "Artist" section just matches to any music "Artists" already set up in the Emby Database so that Music Videos appear alongside of albums. I've never tried to set up Music Videos without a Music library before, so I'm not sure what to suggest. Do you plan to add a music library?

Nothing returned unfortunately. Even tried adding TheMovieDB as another source in the library config.

Of note, the no search results output was returned nearly instantly. For other identify searches, like on TV Shows or Movies, the search understandably takes a moment while the query is submitted to the metadata source, the search executes against the remote database, and the output is returned. Makes me question if the IMVDB source is working at all.

I see the search executing in the log file, but I don't actually see the query/response from IMVDB or (since I added it too) TheMovieDB. Anywhere I can turn the logging up for more detail?

OK so the issue is that internet metadata for artists is not currently supported in music video libraries, so this is why you're not getting anything for them. This is easily added though and will be added for the upcoming 4.8 server release.

Until then, If you have a music or audiobooks library containing the same artist, then they'll be able to get internet metadata that way.

Thanks for the update. I'll wait for the 4.8 release.
