vlc not working anymore as external player

For me VLC just has a black screen. MX Player has permanent spinning circle. Using Fire Cube 3rd gen. EXO Player is too slow with skipping video forward or back. Takes 3-10 seconds for each skip. So I thought I would try another player, but they do not work. Any suggestions?
