House MD S6, Ep3 and on, always have the wrong IMDB Metadata

I've been using emby on Windows for about six months in a very basic manner and everything seems to work fine....

But Season 6 of House is giving me a hard time. Seasons 1-5 of House worked just fine, but on Season 6, every episode from 3 until the end has metadata whose IMDB id is wrong. It's the IMDB id of the previous episode. Episode 3 has Episode 2's IMDB id. Episode 4 has Episode 3's.

I sort of know what triggered this. Episode 1 of the Season was aired in some countries as one episode and in others countries as episode 1 and episode 2.

The repository I have had Episode 1 broken into two files, Ep 1 and Ep 2.

Both the tvdb and imdb for season 6 show this as just one episode

imdb

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0412142/episodes?season=6&ref_=tt_eps_sn_6

tvdb

https://thetvdb.com/series/house/seasons/official/6

When I expanded the repository, what I saw was emby tagged the second half of episode 1 as episode 2 and with that and the successive episodes had the wrong plot lines, cast, etc.

So I used MKVToolnix to join episode 1 and 2.

The House MD season 6 folder now contains files like these:

Quote

House MD - S06E01.mkv (contains the full season 6 episode 1 "Broken")
House MD - s06E02.mkv (contains episode 2 "Epic Fail")
House MD - s06E03.mkv (contains episode 3 "The Tyrant")
House MD - s06E04.mkv
House MD - s06E05.mkv
House MD - s06E06.mkv
House MD - s06E07.mkv
House MD - s06E08.mkv
House MD - s06E09.mkv
House MD - s06E10.mkv

but no matter what I do to get emby to rescan the folder and refresh the metadata, still the metadata from episode 3 has the wrong imdb id, the imdb id of the prior episode.

Because of that, I see in Emby, the right name of an episode, the right plot description, but the cast of the prior episode.

I don't understand what is going on to say the least!

What have I done wrong, and how do I get emby to pick up the correct imdb ids for each episode?

Try removing Season 6 completely from your House MD series folder, scan media library to purge the db, (delete any NFOs if saving with media), put it back, scan library.

Is tvdb your main metadata provider? check that you have configured in your library tvdb has your 1st metadata provider. It sounds like your server is downloading metadata from TheMovieDataBase as you can look here https://www.themoviedb.org/tv/1408-house/season/6 TheMovieDB has "Broken part 1" and "Broken part 2" as the first 2 episodes of the season.

Heh, I actually tried that. Moved the series out completely, deleted everything but the mkvs, moved them back in, waited anticipating great success, and sigh, no joy. Oh well.

Aha! Yes, thanks, my TV Shows library does get metadata from, in order,

  • Series: TheTVDB, TheMovieDb
  • Season: TheMovieDb
  • Episode: TheTVDB, TheMovieDb, The Open Movie Database

So this is very curious to me, noob. The Metadata for the library itself doesn't seem to mention the imdb as a source. The metadata for these episodes all have an imdb ID (that is mostly wrong) but no ID for themoviedb or even a field that I can see to set themoviedb id.

  • How do you suppose the imdb id is getting picked up?
  • Is there any way to explicitly set themoviedb id?

I see that I can set the correct imdb id for a given episode but when I do so, even after I have refreshed the metadata the bad cast information remains. Yet, I'd hate to remove themoviedb entirely if it is providing good cast data for my other shows.

So I don't know how to proceed. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

As far as i know and somebody correct me if i'm wrong. The IMDB is really not being used for any metadata downloading (due the very high fees they have), instead in emby is used for ID the content and then looking for it in other providers, most likely the imdb id is picked from any other metadata provider at the moment of searching metadata according to the name of the file/folder.

Sadly themoviedb doesn't use any id at the episode level, they only match episode number with the content on the series id. But it should allow you to download metadata from tvdb, i'm thinking that your problem could be related to tvdb not being free anymore, you have to pay for the api access and configure the emby tvdb plugin with those credential i ignore how you do that. So i'm thinking that maybe you don't have configured the plugin, after tvdb not responding, emby uses your second metadata provider.

Well that's interesting! And disappointing, but oh well, ...

The Emby TVDB plugin has no configuration.

Although restricting some access to TVDB to subscribers has been talked about for quite a while, it doesn't seem to have happened.  You can subscribe to TVDB, but it doesn't get you much other than a warm feeling - and there's an alternative way to earn points towards a free "subscription".

You don't have to pay for tvdb. You can use Emby Server's built-in tvdb support.

Should I uninstall the tvdb plugin or just leave it there?

I suspect this has nothing to do with the issue I am seeing, but just want to set things up properly

I would leave it because if you have a TV library, you're probably going to need it for other tv series you might add later.

If you remove it then what will probably happen is the next time you add a new series you'll be wondering why you're not getting any internet metadata.
