fbrassin 47 Posted May 26, 2023 Posted May 26, 2023 Hello, i've just changed my ISP and i realized i haven't got a public ip (i should pay for it). Is there i way to connect to my emby from remote without public ip? If yes, how? I tried with plex and i can connect from outside, but i'm not able to with emby. Tnx
Solution pwhodges 2012 Posted May 26, 2023 Solution Posted May 26, 2023 Plex diverts your data through its own servers in this instance - Emby doesn't do that. You do have an external IP address, because that's how data gets sent to you from the Internet. You can find your (current?, see below) IP address by asking a suitable web site, such as https://www.whatismyip.com/ You may then be able to use this IP address to connect with Emby, after forwarding the appropriate ports in your router: https://emby.media/support/articles/Remote-Setup.html#:~:text=Turn on Remote Access, connections to this Emby Server".&text=If you have a router,Enable automatic port mapping" feature. Note that it is strongly preferred on security grounds to do the port forwarding manually rather than relying on uPNP. There are two possible complications once you have reached this point - one is that your IP address might get changed from time to time. If your ISP is offering a fixed IP address for money, then this is very likely. In this case you can use Dynamic DNS (DDNS) to save spending on a fixed IP address, which will automatically update a domain name for you when it sees that happen. There are many DDNS services - Google is your friend. The other complication is that if your ISP uses cgNAT (Carrier-Grade NAT - another layer of NAT within their systems) then you will have no access to their system to set up the necessary port-forwarding and so you're stuffed. In this case you need to set up a tunnel, which can be done using CloudFlare, or ZeroTier - people in the forum can help with advice using these options if it come to that. Paul
fbrassin 47 Posted May 27, 2023 Author Posted May 27, 2023 Tnx for your post. My situation is the last one. My ISP uses cgNAT I have my emby on an Ubuntu server. Do you think it is better to try cloudflare or zeroTier?
pwhodges 2012 Posted May 27, 2023 Posted May 27, 2023 CloudFlare's probably the best known around here, but I have no experience of either so I'll leave it to others to make recommendations. There are threads in the forums covering both of them (and also Tailscale, which I forgot to mention before). Paul
Spaceboy 2573 Posted May 27, 2023 Posted May 27, 2023 been using cloudflare for a long time (5+ years i think) and it was quite easy to set up. does everything as expected and i havent been caught by the restrictions on streaming video via it, but i know others here have https://blog.awelswynol.co.uk/2018-01-setting-up-cloudflare-with-emby/ was my guide
pwhodges 2012 Posted May 27, 2023 Posted May 27, 2023 Are you using it as a tunnel, though? That's what the OP needs, not just a reverse proxy. Paul

Paul because of the cgnat? i have no experience of that but i've read a few post recently on people using tunnels. but CF experience generally is very good
pwhodges 2012 Posted May 27, 2023 Posted May 27, 2023 Here is CloudFlare's documentation about setting up their tunnel: https://developers.cloudflare.com/cloudflare-one/connections/connect-apps/ Paul
CBers 7450 Posted May 27, 2023 Posted May 27, 2023 I've switched from using a RP to using CloudFlare Tunnels and it works really well with Emby. Now use it for other services I run on my home server.
KMBanana 116 Posted May 27, 2023 Posted May 27, 2023 As a heads up using cloudflare tunnel or proxy for video streaming is against their ToS and they have banned accounts for it.
pwhodges 2012 Posted May 27, 2023 Posted May 27, 2023 I thought it was only caching of video that was prohibited, but I may be wrong... Paul
fbrassin 47 Posted May 29, 2023 Author Posted May 29, 2023 Tnx to all for the answer. I set up zerotier and it works find. Now i'm going to try cloudflare

Is it just me?
Spaceboy 2573 Posted May 29, 2023 Posted May 29, 2023 no, not just you. the page is 5+ years old and the links seem broken. probably best just trying the internal emby resource its on my list to try tailscale because although i've avoided CF's lens so far, i expect to get banned by them at some point. i know nothing of zerotier though and that seems like another option 1

Mister Steve 30 Posted June 5, 2023 Posted June 5, 2023 My ISP also implemented cgNAT and I use TailScale for remote access. It was simple to set up and works well.
