frankmomma 2 Posted May 20, 2023 Posted May 20, 2023 (edited) Hello, I'm fairly new to using the conversions capabilities in Emby but have been messing around with them the past few days. I have some direct Blu-Ray rips which are between 30-40GB that I want to convert to HEVC. I've ran the conversion with the following settings. Original media folder, replacing original files Container Custom Container - MKV Video codec - HEVC Audio codec - AAC Original quality I've monitored the GPU / CPU on my server during these conversions & noticed they both sit around 20% usage during conversions. I tested running some ffmpeg conversion outside of emby (very basic commands) & confirmed that they use more of 70 - 80% of my GPU. Reviewing conversion logs, I'm seeing fps about 50 & speed between 1.5 - 2 & bitrate below 3kbits/s When running outside of Emby I'm seeing fps about 85, speed between 3.4 - 4 & bitrate around 9kbits/s I want Emby Conversions to utilize all / most of my GPU. I feel this will speed up the conversion time as well as the quality of the video output I'm also concerned that the file being output isn't original quality as they are roughly 10x smaller & bitrate is much lower. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help or provide insight. ffmpeg-transcode-fc051065-a5d7-4f93-be66-7845a94c7c41_1.txt ffmpeg-transcode-6239cc77-8fde-453e-9efa-10dccda019bb_1.txt Edited May 20, 2023 by frankmomma
Luke 42083 Posted May 22, 2023 Posted May 22, 2023 Hi, in the upcoming 4.8 server release you should see a higher output bitrate with these conversions. That in turn may increase the gpu consumption during the conversion process.
frankmomma 2 Posted May 22, 2023 Author Posted May 22, 2023 Thanks Luke, Is the expected increase of output bitrate related to the ffmpeg command that gets generated based on the conversion settings? Meaning is the command / options changing? Or is it the update to ffmpeg 5.1 in next versions should have performance gains? As I mentioned, I'm fairly new to the whole conversions / compression so please excuse my next question if it is stupid. With increased Bitrate I understand that the file sizes should be larger. However, how drastically does it impact video quality? Any sort of recommendations on what bitrate to target for a HEVC 1080p movie? Appreciate your assistance & information.
Luke 42083 Posted May 22, 2023 Posted May 22, 2023 It’s related to the params being passed to ffmpeg. 1
