Multi-Version movies... HOW?

I've done my research. I've used the Google/Bing/whatever. This really needs to be clarified, because it's quite vague, and even when used as suggested, it doesn't work

From the docs (example) . This should show up as Expendables 3 , unrated edition

D:\Movies\Movies2\Plex\The Expendables 3 (2014)\The Expendables 3 (2014) - Unrated Edition.BluRay.1080p.HEVC.mp4

From the forums (example). This one should show up as The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

The Hobbit_ The Desolation of Smaug  (2013).BluRay.1080p.x265 - [ Extended ]

Neither one of these, however, show up as separate versions. They both show up as separate movies themselves.

There really needs to be a clear cut, and definitive way to do this. Using multiple folders and creating collections isn't really the solution here. Something less confusing.

KB article is quite clear, not sure what's vague there. Considering it IS working for numerous users, I'd say your particular setup needs to be looked at: how are your files named/organized?

Where was that suggested? As using multiple folders is actually opposite to what is stipulated in KB (though it is feasible to have those and manually group versions or make use of community-made plugin), Emby core requires single movie folder for all versions for automatic multi-versioning.

I've given plenty of information. It's all in the filename, as expected. The post itself gave specifics on how they should be named. I really couldn't have been any more clear.

Obviously not, because the first example used quite literally used the KB article formatting, and still, it doesn't show up properly. two separate versions of TE3 show up in the library

In the forum post I linked, a couple of times actually.

If the KB article worked, then I wouldn't be making this post, because, again, the file name is exactly as the kb article suggested.

You're philosophying too much and not providing information asked, if you expect to get any assistance you might think of being more forthcoming. You wouldn't be asked for above is everything was as clear as you assume it is. Since multi-versioning is not dependant on filename only, but folder name and other video files present, information you provided till now helps in no way.

Except I'm not.  I'm not philosophizing at all. I'm stating clear facts. Once again. Per the docs

THIS:
The Expendables 3 (2014) - Unrated Edition.BluRay.1080p.HEVC.mp4

should read as
THIS

Expendables 3, unrated edition

it does not

NONE of this is mentioned in the docs, nor is it "clear cut". Thanks for proving my original point.

Before Emby gets involved, there are precisely two files in the directory. Yes, I changed them a bit, to try to eliminate ANY possibility of confusion there (one was hevc, one was x256 because that's how Filebot is told to label things)

Quote

D:\Movies\Movies2\Plex\The Expendables 3 (2014)\The Expendables 3 (2014).BluRay.1080p - Theatrical Edition.mp4
D:\Movies\Movies2\Plex\The Expendables 3 (2014)\The Expendables 3 (2014).BluRay.1080p - Unrated Edition.mp4

That's it. The directory is right there, the filenames are right there. Everything follows the docs, 100%. If there were extras, I'd add them to their own directory, again, per docs, but there aren't in this case.

Still, even after a rescan (verified the new file names are read properly), the movies show up separately,

Thank you.

Now read the bold letters from KB article:

Quote

Multi-version movies

Multiple versions of the same content can be stored in a single movie folder.

/Movies
  /300 (2006)
  /300 (2006)/300 (2006) - 1080p.mkv
  /300 (2006)/300 (2006) - 1080p-trailer.mp4
  /300 (2006)/300 (2006) - 4K.mkv
  /300 (2006)/300 (2006) - 720p.mp4
  /300 (2006)/300 (2006) - extended edition.mp4
  /300 (2006)/300 (2006) - directors cut.mp4
  /300 (2006)/300 (2006) - 3D.hsbs.mp4

Each version must begin with the folder name, followed by " - ".

If using the dash method anything following the dash will be what you see in the Emby client app.

You have your files named wrongly.

That's it. The directory is right there, the filenames are right there. Everything follows the docs, 100%.

As said above, you have those files incorrectly named.

For your movie folder named

The Expendables 3 (2014)

movies within should be named:

The Expendables 3 (2014) - whatever,

and everything after the dash is what you'll see in version dropdown.

If that naming structure throws Emby off, then that's an Emby issue, it's not a file name issue.

The extensions are absolutely following standards. Nobody is going to break naming conventions for a piece of software that can't even properly handle itself.

Ok lets break this down.

D:\Movies\Movies2\Plex\The Expendables 3 (2014)\The Expendables 3 (2014).BluRay.1080p - Theatrical Edition.mp4
D:\Movies\Movies2\Plex\The Expendables 3 (2014)\The Expendables 3 (2014).BluRay.1080p - Unrated Edition.mp4

This is your folder name: The Expendables 3 (2014)

This is your file name: The Expendables 3 (2014).BluRay.1080p - Theatrical Edition.mp4

But you have this in your file name .BluRay.1080p

Remove  .BluRay.1080p

The Expendables 3 (2014) - whatever,

and everything after the dash is what you'll see in version dropdown.

Does this help you ?

I'm well aware of what Emby expects, now, however that aint happening

Emby expects naming conventions to be broken, simply because they cannot properly handle multiple versions of files. Standards exist for a reason.

While I hate to use competition as an example (there's a reason I left that garbage), when it comes to naming standards, they did it right, as they SHOULD be respected and followed

Where is a standard for the naming of ripped or downloaded video files defined?

Obviously there isn't.

Anyway, the naming you're currently using for multi-version is something we can look at supporting. But for today's purposes, it's not currently.

You gotta be kidding me.

Name your folder as your files or name your files as your folder. It ain't rocket science. Nor does it warrant so much whining. If you do not want to conform to naming guidelines, Multi-select>Group versions manually or use Auto-grouping plugin. Options galore. See no reason why Emby should be pampering to whoever comes with their own idea of how and under which conditions a feature should be functioning as it'll become a garbled mess and more likely than not break something else.

The reason this standard was adopted (and yes it is a standard) is to make it easier to find subtitles through various providers, using file extensions

The file is named properly. Emby considers extensions part of the file name for this process, which it shouldn't be doing

Not for multi versioning they're not, which is what this is all about isn't it?

No it doesn't. File extensions are irrelevant for this. I suggest you re-read the documentation and others explanations, I have a feeling you still don't get it.

Oh, I get it just fine. Emby cannot handle this properly and requires individuals to break standards for their own purposes.

Sorry to necrobump, but when I add a new version to a movie that already has 2, they become all shown as separate 3 movies in my emby catalogue?

Is there a limit of two versions?

HI, there is no such limitation. Can you please provide a specific example? Thanks.

They are named correctly (?), but for some reason there are still two different entries in my library.

Yeah workprint versions is not named properly.  You may notice the period between The and Punisher

The.Punisher (1989) - Workprint.mkv should be renamed to

The Punisher (1989) - Workprint.mkv
