Connection failure. Cannot set up server

Hello. I am a premier user.

I am using the hotel's open Wi-Fi network.

I made set up of the server on my laptop. In-Home (LAN) access: http://10.128.2.102:8096 .

When I try to use Emby on iOS or on my smart TV, it asks to select a server. I choose "add server" - whatever I try to enter, nothing works.  When I use "sign in Emby Connect" it also does not work as it takes me back to "Select Server" page again.

I am attaching a log file.  Please help.

Hi, are you sure that is the correct LAN address for your server machine?

Hello. Thank you for the attention. Well, I do not know where and how to see the LAN address. This is the screenshot from Emby server configuration.

If I need to look somewhere else - please let me know where and how.

you could try running ipconfig /all from a command prompt to locate your ip address. just to make sure the server has detected the right one.

I did prompt - please tell me what to enter in "Host:" field when I try to set up the service in my Iphone app

it looks like server is not running at all, whatever I enter, it does not work, it says "connection fail" .

Well I can't read that but based on what i see it looks like perhaps the server did detect the correct ip address. Have you checked windows firewall to see if there might be any blocking rules against emby server?

I do not see any problems. I have Bitdefend Security antivirus . I see its firewall granted access to all processes .

What should I enter to "host:" when I try connect to server manually (as emby connect does not work, I click emby connect, then I enter login and password and it returns me to the same page )

What did you see?

Enter your server IP address. Emby Connect works just fine, but it looks like you have something blocking the incoming connections. It most likely is firewall related on your server machine.

For now the easiest test I would focus on is without Emby Connect and just putting the in-home address into the browser address bar of a different device, such as a smart phone. Make sure the phone is also on the same wifi network. Until you get that basic connection working, none of the others are going to work. Please let us know what you find.

Did you try the browser test that I suggested?

OK. Please be understanding that the answer to this is something specific to your environment and/or the hotel network, so you'll have to forgive me when I say "I don't know".

But this typically comes down to firewall blocking the incoming connection. I would probably suggest completely turning off BitDefend to rule it out as a source of the issue.

In the first screenshot you provided at the top of this page, in the server dashboard where it says In-Home (LAN) address...put that into the address bar of your web browser on your smart phone. Make sure the phone is connected to the same wifi network.

Since the server is on a local address, you will only be able to reach it from another device in the same subnet.  Have you checked that your iPhone is getting an address in the same subnet as the server?

No, phone cannot connect to LAN in-home address.

Have you checked that your iPhone is getting an address in the same subnet as the server? - How to check it  ?

Sorry.

I checked for my Iphone

IP address 10.128.27.2

Subnet Mask 255.255.192.0

Router 10.128.0.1

Click on the (i) next to the wifi connection in the settings - the IP address is in there.

Hmm - that looks OK - both addresses (iPhone and server) are in the same /18 subnet.  Not sure what to look at next...

It may be that the network uses some enterprise equipment which can restrict devices on the same network from talking to each other (but allowing the gateway, of course).

This would be an obvious security measure in a public place like a hotel with lots of strangers sharing a subnet.  I know switches can be made to do this; I suppose wi-fi can too, but it's outside my experience.

If this is the case, you're stuffed.

(Late night musing: I wonder if you could get anywhere by enabling the hotspot in your phone and connecting the laptop directly to that - probably not, but may be worth a try).

I also thought about it . I was at the apartment with usual home network and my own usual router - everything was really fine ( except files with .avi stopping after 20 minutes of playback),

but now I moved to the hotel with this public fully open network and nothing works. I will try to set up virtual router on my laptop and use this new network .... let's see.

Thank you all for your support and help!

The best search term is "client isolation", and it's often used to set up "guest mode".  It turns out that even my home router can do this in its wi-fi, so I can set up a separate guest SID which behaves this way.

It's just not a thing I've ever had a need to think about.
