justinrh 260 Posted April 23, 2023 Posted April 23, 2023 ATV audio playback it set to 'auto', and my Shield is not set to upscale stereo, but when I play some (2 channel) stereo videos, the soundbar says I'm playing Dolby (the TV says Dolby Audio - DD). The TS files are direct streaming. Why and how am I getting Dolby?
pwhodges 2012 Posted April 23, 2023 Posted April 23, 2023 (edited) DD or Dolby Digital Dolby Surround is a matrix format which tries to compress several channels into two using subtle fiddling with phase changes. It can be decoded into the original multiple channels, but with lots of cross-talk, or the two channels can be played as stereo with some phasey artefacts. justinrh 260 Posted April 24, 2023 Author Posted April 24, 2023 So why am I getting DD instead of the original AC3 stereo?
Solution pwhodges 2012 Posted April 24, 2023 Solution Posted April 24, 2023 (edited) AC3 is the name of the encoding in Dolby Digital. It can be used for 2-channel sources as well as 5.1 - you simply have a two-channel AC3 stream. N.B. My previous answer is wrong - I was describing "Dolby Surround". The terminology of the many Dolby formats is confusing and easy to get lost in! Paul Edited April 24, 2023 by pwhodges
