Can't connect remotely

Recommended Posts

I am trying to remotely connect and can't get it going for some reason.  I will list what I've done, and if it helps I'm running a Ubiquiti Unifi Dream Machine for my router.

- Auto port forwarding didn't work

- Unchecked auto port and set port forwarding up in my router using the local server IP address

- Did the above using the external IP address

- Read through the help article multiple times

Nothing is working.  I have gotten Plex to connect remotely (albeit with issues making me want to switch), but can't get Emby too.  Locally it works perfectly.

Please help.  Thanks.

Everything.  Emby Connect, locating external address, and port forwarding.  Even tried different browsers.

How did you locate your external address? Can you show a screenshot of the port forwarding you configured in your router?

From the dashboard.  I wasn't clear on whether the port forwarding needing to be on the LAN or WAN (figured LAN though) address....but tried with both.

Are you able to connect from other devices inside your local network?

On my local network everything works good.  I disconnected my phone from my home WiFi and nothing.

I don't think I mentioned it but I have NordVPN running 100% of the time.  I do have split tunneling on disabling it on all Emby processes, and I did disconnect it and still couldn't get outside my network to work.

I would try disabling the vpn to help narrow down the source of the issue.

I did try that, still nothing.

Have you customized any emby server network settings?

Not other what I put in my initial post.  I did just try changing the ports to see if that would help....it didn't.  And yes I did change them in the port forwarding also.

What about the firewall on the Emby server machine?  Might also need to make sure your network profile is set to private - one time I couldn't get any connections to a server and it only because of the network profile.  It looks like your ISP wouldn't be blocking port 8***.

So what exactly happens when you try to connect with what inputs?  (Got a pic of that?)  And some browsers try to force HTTPS ...

And I've also seen times where I have to restart Emby after a network change.

Does your Plex connection still work when on an outside network?

BTW, I can't discern that image, it is just too small (even when clicked).

I tried setting to private, still not working.

I've tried 4 different browsers all with no go.  It tried to connect to server using Emby Connect but gives me a popup saying it can't connect right now (something like that).

Restarted, exited/reopened, and reset computer a ton....nothing.

And yes...Plex works outside my network.  It won't transcode above 2mbs 720p though.....hence the reason I was hoping Emby would work.

Because they have a relay feature where if the direct connection fails, they can run everything through their own servers. When they do that, they limit to 2 mbps or less.

We don't have that sort of thing because we're more focused on having a private media server. Do you really want all of your data and video streams running through a Plex server?

So if not for their relay feature, you'd be having the same problem with them as well.

I wasn't aware of that, and that would explain it.

Anything you can think of I can check?  I've not always had this issue.  I'd venture to guess it due to my router, but with the port forwarding setup it doesn't make sense.  Here's the info on the computer running Emby and Plex in case it helps.

- Windows 11

- NordVPN running, but split tunneling turned on for both.

- Unifi Dream Machine, running hard wired to PC

- AT&T Fiber Modem, haven't changed any settings in it as I didn't think I needed to as it's not doing my routing.

I'd suggest you start as simple as possible just to check connectivity from a remote network, then add more pieces.  And you should probably double-check the ISP modem settings, as they could push a change at any time.

And you have to know that the ports are not being blocked on the networks you use.

My frame of reference is a direct connection to my Emby server, as I don't use Emby Connect and am unfamiliar with it.

A few things to try/look at. First, reboot the server machine and see if the IP has changed. Second, in the UDM, check the rules and make sure that it's accepting. Third, turn on allow logging. I see you have it disabled.

I ran into the same problem as you, everything I tried was without result and the fact that you need so much patience to make the right settings so that it can be connected even outside the home network leads to saturation and waste of time.
I recommend you to try something else, you have so many options that it is not worth bothering with it.

HI, what do you think is not worth bothering with?

For the simple fact that there are too many steps to follow and nerves stretched to the max, something that must be as intuitive and easily derealized as possible.
Any other application I install, whether we're talking about Kodi, Stremiio, Plex, Jellyfin...etc, is quickly resolved.
In the end, I have no intention of creating polemics, I like Emby enormously, but in this part he suffers in my opinion and disgusts me
Cheers!

This problem is almost certainly because he is using a VPN, Emby is pretty straight forward to setup normally.

I'm sure he also tried with the vpn disconnected.
In my case when I use Emby, the vpn is off in linux because otherwise my client does not connect.
However, I still need programming courses, lots of coffee and patience to connect it outside the home network.
Better not, thanks.

Haven't we just confirmed earlier in this thread that the original poster's issue is not Emby-specific?
