I have a Netgear R9000 router with a 2TB WD MyPassport external SSD connected to it via USB.  The router has the capability to utilize that external SSD as a "readyshare" and put a Plex server on it.  Question is, how would I go about putting an Emby server on it?  Thanks for any assistance you can provide.

How do you put the Plex server on it?  I'd hazard a guess that Plex doesn't run on the router, just uses it's share from another machine.  You could do the same with Emby.  If I was doing this, I would be sure that the Emby server was hardwired to the router because if you use WiFi you're going to add to your latency unless you have a format that can direct stream and you setup the network shares so that they don't have to pass through the server.

The Netgear Nighthawk R9000 as built in Plex media server (I'm guessing its just a interface for Plex on to the router itself) but you need to have a USB external drive connected to it for the database/server.  I'm basically trying to brainstorm how to utilize this 2TB external SSD as the server.  Hooking it up directly to my Synology NAS, in order to create a shared folder for the server, you have to select a Volume.  Evidently Synology doesn't recognize external drives as a Volume (which sucks).

Without a Emby interface on the Router (like Plex), how in the world would I install it on the USB external SSD connected to the router??

Does it have access to the Netgear app store? If yes, then we should be able to develop a package for it.

But I'm guessing it doesn't, and it's got Plex preloaded due to the fact that they're partnering with each other, but it's not actually possible to install other software on it.

@LukeYeah there is nothing on Netgear for Emby.  But I'm actually trying to figure out a way to install the Emby server on an external USB SSD that I have connected directly to the R9000 router.  I can see the SSD on the network, but not sure how to configure a Emby server download/install to be directed to that drive.

Emby has to run on an operating system.  You can't install or run Emby (or any application) on media that is not part of an OS.  Hypothetically, if Emby had a version compatible with the router OS, you could install it from the router shell (or just copy if portable) and execute Emby.   You have to have an OS context to execute it.

@justinrhThanks for the info.  If I were to use this same external USB SSD and connect it to my computer, would I be able to install/run Emby that way?  I'm guessing it would be the Windows install but how would I direct the install to the external SSD?  I think it automatically trys to install on your regular C drive.

The normal Windows installer doesn't give you an option (shame!), but you can install the portable edition anywhere.  You could run it that way.

Keep in mind that the Emby application and your media files don't have to live on the same drive.  You can install Emby on your C drive and have your SSD on the router with network shares to your media.  (Historically, serving files from a router has not been good, but maybe your muscle router can do a good job.)

Yeah thats what I though about the normal Windows installer.  Will try the portable edition and try installing it to the external SSD (I leave the computer on all the time so shouldn't be an issue).  I have a Synology DS918+ and the expansion NAS as well but I just don't want to waste a drive to plug in a SSD for just the server.  Everything I read is that the server runs faster/more efficiently on a SSD

Yes it definitely will.
