Is there a decent metadata source for genres? I have a "movie" genre, which is useless, Detour is my only "film noir" despite Double Indemnity, The Maltese Falcon, Touch of Evil, The Big Sleep, Out of the Past, Kiss Me Deadly, In a Lonely Place, The Big Heat, Laura, Where the Sidewalk Ends, and many many more being on my server. I have  "science fiction" genre and a "sci-fi" genre, because that's helpful.

AFAIK I'm using TMDB right now.

"Film noir" actually ain't genre - neither it is listed as one even for Detour, the only one you have it (so maybe manually added?) on TMDB, just "Drama, Thriller".

What you're after are "Keywords" (basically Tags). Emby unfortunately doesn't make use of those (some other 3rd party software allows for scraping IMDB & TMDB keywords as tags - that's where majority of 100,000+ tags attached to my media comes from).

You can lend your support here:

I don't really mind whether it's there or not, it just makes no sense having Detour and nothing else. I didn't add it, maybe it had that genre assigned at the time of import? No idea.

On top of the thoroughly useless "movie" genre, I have both "sci fi" and "science fiction" genres, as well as "music" and "musical", "reality" and "reality-tv", and "soap" and "soap opera". Some genres just don't have any films. Others are visible in a library's genres list, but don't have any films in that library (though they do in other libraries). Some of the collage images have posters for films that do not have that genre assigned (eg "biography" includes the poster image for Professor Marston and the Wonder Women, but that film doesn't have "biography" as an assigned genre).

I certainly don't want my genres polluted by "based on novel or book" or "male pianist" or any other clutter. I want less of a confused mess, not more. That said, I wouldn't complain about things like "biography" and "film noir" coming in, wherever they came from.

For 'useless' genres you can make use of Genre Cleaner plugin.

As for others you'd like to have as genres - you can't if the providers don't have them (like in the example above) or if you don't add them manually, you could only have tags: no keyword will ever be listed as genre in your library.

Is there a way to figure out which films have which genre without going library-by-library?

If I delete or map a genre in genre cleaner, does that apply to existing films or only going forward?

EDIT: Backing out of the editor, the plugin itself explains that it does re-edit.

Reports plugin would list you that.

It should apply to existing items upon library scan.

For reference, these are genres you'd get from TMDB, everything else (like 'Film noir') would fall under keywords/tags

So where the hell did all those other genres come from, then?

Maybe there were there at some point in the past before genre policy became more strict; maybe OMDB. Either way, you'd only get those at present.
