Is hardware decode (ie: quicksync) used for other than transcoding?

Is hardware (ie: quicksync) used for anything other than transcoding?  Is it used for tasks such as thumbnail generation or other tasks which take a long time to perform and can potentially be sped up with a graphics hardware upgrade?

While tonemapping is used for HDR thumbnail generation, it does so in software as there is no advantage to do it in hardware.  As far as I'm aware, h/w acceleration is only used in transcoding and tonemapping (via ffmpeg).
