Always download srt (subtitle files) -- just like other metadata

I'm hard-of-hearing and use subtitles most of the time.  Right now I have to go into each episode and request srt file downloads.  Needless to say this is a real pita.  Can I have the option to include srt files like any other metadata?

Hi there, have you explored the automatic subtitle download options on your libraries?

Sorry, I didn't even know I could click on the library card for options.  I assumed the three dots was for settings.  Is there a reason for both?

In any case I couldn't find an option to turn subtitle downloading on and off.   I Unchecked hash match and did a manual reload of metadata for a show and it didn't work.  I do have Open settings login set up.

Sorry again.  I see the files are there now.  I don't know if it was metadata refresh or scanning again that got them.  I hope it was scanning.  Thanks and sorry to bother you.

Ok, so I have different feature request.  It would be nice to always download the srt files for every show on scanning.  Have to manually force a meta refresh when every new file comes in is also a pita.

No need for Feature Request, that is how it already works (if you set automatic subtitle downloads in your library settings): subs for an item are downloaded upon initial import and subsequently during scheduled task "Download missing subtitles" if not available from providers at the time of import (again, if available).

I'm sorry if I'm an idiot but I cannot find any automatic subtitle download option anywhere in the web app.  Can you point me to it?

Not positive but believe it is only linked to the Scheduled task.  But not limited to the default OpenSubtitles plugin.  see catalog

Emby Automatic Subtitle Downloads :

IIRC it was done on initial import as well. Not that I've used it lately but I seem to remember so. Might be wrong, though.

I'm starting to figure things out.  Here are some things I found ...

1) If you are not a VIP member of Open Subtitles you will be limited quickly when processing a lot of shows.  This was the problem that caused me to create this thread.  I would like to make a feature request to show some kind of warning when this limit blocks downloading.

3) If you have the hash match off you can get timing wildly off.  The show I'm testing on has "Previously On" removed so my titles are about 30 seconds off.  The timing adjustment cannot handle this.  So I would like to make a feature request to fix this.

Let me know if I should put these feature requests in new posts.

All in all I think I understand things well enough to use subtitles now.  Thanks to all for putting up with my questions.

As a non-VIP user you are limited to 200 subs/24 hrs, as VIP that goes to 1000/24h. That's OpenSubtitles limit, not Emby, after which calls just start to be refused without any particular error code, not sure what would you like to request there. Either way, depending on the size of your library, over few runs of Download subtitles Scheduled task you should get all subs: 200 by 200 or 1000 by 1000. It's literal example of "time is money": spend more time obtaining those for free or pay and obtain them faster.

Yes, having hash-match enabled will get you either perfectly synced subs - or none. With it disabled, logic is IMDB>Name match with first result returned from provider selected, so it's basically a lottery.
