I reckon both you and Luke are misunderstanding @kurtgschumacher, as his post refers to "Add to Collection" dialog (in line with what this thread is all about) which is a list nowdays, as opposed to once grid, and has nothing to do with Collection library grouped/ungrouped display.

Yes, exactly.

So get rid of the list all together and had have recent and search box as no matter what you do hundreds of collections will never display well via a add menu.

So what you're saying is that instead of fixing a feature that's broken (IMHO), we should just stop using it? The previous display on Add to Collection (emphasizing so you don't tell me to use Group By again) worked fine for me. Except that you will apparently never put an alphapicker on it, which would make it perfect. And please don't tell me to "type the first three letters" because that's a really bad user interface design, and I found it easier to scroll to the collection I wanted... when it was a grid.

A different view/layout is not broke (IMHO).  But no I suggest the dev remove listing all and just put a search box.  As it is pointless to show hundreds of existing Collections.  It did not really work in 4.7 either when it was grid.  But hey they will never please everyone.

It's broke if we don't like the change and there's no option to change it back to what it was,

Actually, it worked very well. The only reason I can think of for this change is because it works better on a phone, and that may be a legitimate reason. But it doesn't work well on a desktop, where 4.7 worked very well. The philosophy of "mobile first" is fine, but "mobile first and desktop can F-off" is not.

I would have thought a search box only works if you know what to search for. Fr'instance I would search for our Da Vinci Code collection under D, but apparently I need to search under R for the Robert Langford collection. And being able to find stuff by looking at images is also a plus.

I'd prefer more than just search. Search and grid would be good. Or grid and alpha picker with recent 5 at the top.
