Add to Collections changed to a list format view.

Hello,

Did something change in the settings or maybe I changed something, but when I select a movie to "add to collections" the collections view is a list instead of the whole page of collections. Is there any way to get it back to the full-page view instead of a list?

Thank you,

I will guess you are seeing this via online app app.emby.media, but yes this is a change coming in 4.8 that can be seen via the online app.

Yes, that's the list i'm referring to. Will there be any way to change this from a list to a full page?

More change for changes sake that nobody asked for ?

Why was this changed? The full-page view was much easier to navigate through vs this list.

Design is changing as work is done around the sidebar.

But if it remains as a list, it needs an alpha picker.  But currently still have keyboard typing to jump.

While I might well like that format it is useless for me without an alpha picker on the side (which I asked for a long time ago) for quick navigation to the desired collection.

I believe any screen like that needs an alpha picker or it gets too cumbersome to use once you get beyond a couple of dozen entries and I have something like 300+ collections. When I want to add a movie to an existing collection it can, and does, take a long time to get to the desired collection and the new screen, because it has fewer entries per screen will take even longer.

There are some people that often do not have a keyboard in use when all is wanted is to add to a collection, or bunch of collections. An alpha picker is needed in all such screens, regardless of keyboard navigation, for comfortable use of the Emby web interface. I sit in a recliner and can watch all my clients and even work on the database from it but it is uncomfortable to hold a keyboard in my lap all the time.

Keyboard navigation works but it is inconvenient at best for those of us that cannot sit at a desk. An alpha picker just seems so basic for this screen.

BTW: I cannot see any advantage to the "new" format for add to collections. All it seems to do is greatly reduce the number of collections on the screen at any one time. And that is NOT good at all. There is a LOT of totally wasted space in the "list" format and there is "no redeeming social value" and we all know what category having "no redeeming social value" means for content and design is about the same.

In other words I believe that changing to a "list" style is the coding equivalent of pornography with the "value" of at least sometimes being exciting. I see no positives in a list view and a LOT of negatives.

On my screen in a browser add to collection displays 30 items at a time and the new improved version is going to display 5 ? Impressive.

Do you still think that? The idea is to help you get to your recently used ones quicker.

I guess you're asking the OP, but all I see is acres of wasted space -

Having Recent at the top is good idea though. How about going back to the grid but the first row consists of recent items ?

I personally do not like the list view. I like the grid view better, just my 2 cents.

Except that "recently used" is only one item, which is unlikely to be particularly helpful - if I'm adding a lot of things to one collection I'm probably multi-selecting them. Having a small selection of "frequently used" might help some people, but I can't imagine that cropping up much either.

And if you want a collection that isn't your most recently used collection, you now have to do significantly more scrolling than previously. It's a massive pain in the ass.

I just upgraded from a 4.7 version to 4.8.7.0. I know a lot has changed, and there's one thing that I think is absolutely horrible. When I want to add something to a Collection, instead of getting a grid as in 4.7, I get a list, and I can't find any way to change how it's displayed. So in order to find a Collection I have to scroll six times more (on my screen that used to display six across). I don't know why this was changed. I'm running with a 32" monitor at 1920 x 1080 resolution. I can't think of any logical reason that you would display a list of collection as if I was using a phone, unless you are assuming that everyone is using a phone.

But there's only 1 recent collection listed, and why cant you have recent at the top of a full page rather than a list?

The decision to change how collections display and not have an alphapicker on the "add to collection" are poor choices by Emby. But Emby has made other poor choices in the past and it takes overwhelming evidence to get them to even think about changing things. Once Emby digs their heals in there is little that can be done that actually even might have an effect.

Emby is usually quite responsive to complaints but if they have decided that their way is right it takes monumental effort to get them to even acknowledge they might be wrong or that others might have a better idea of how things should be done.

As responsive as Emby is to user requests they simply become extremely reticent to make changes to benefit users.

I know the change in "add to collection" is an error and you know it is an error but Emby, in their apparently tunnel vision extreme, just refuses to see or act on the collection bugs/issues/stupidity of their initial choices.

Due to the stupidity of Emby related to "add to collection" I have stopped, mostly, the use of collections at all. Emby remains very good and I use it daily but I have lost the desire to use collections even though they could be very useful. The changes made by Emby and their failure to add an alphapicker to the add screen means that collections are now useless to me. Through no fault of mine a potentially very useful feature is not just dead code cluttering up the program space that could/should be used to actually make Emby more useful.

I thought maybe I should convert all my collections to playlists, but they have the same stupid display there. 😠 Except when I upgraded to 4.8.7.0 all my playlists disappeared, and I don't want to risk that again.

Hi, have you tried clicking the group by button? You’re in complete control.

There is no "group by" button, or any other kind of control, on the add to collection or playlist pages. Nor is there any such button on the group or collection pages. Please tell me where this complete control can be found?

I just found this comment by you on a search: "Hi, yes there will be a group by button in 4.8.8. Thanks."

That's nice, but as I said in my original post, I am running 4.8.7. And my question has nothing to do with how the groups are displayed when adding a movie to a group.

Sorry I don't follow as it was a design change and now in order to get grid view back you have to install 4.8.8.0+ and change the group by option.

But really all of your post have noting to do with this topic and should be split into its own topic.  @GrimReaper

I reckon both you and Luke are misunderstanding @kurtgschumacher, as his post refers to "Add to Collection" dialog (in line with what this thread is all about) which is a list nowdays, as opposed to once grid, and has nothing to do with Collection library grouped/ungrouped display.

So get rid of the list all together and had have recent and search box as no matter what you do hundreds of collections will never display well via a add menu.
